Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Christopher Murray on the Global Burden of Disease and the Hidden Threats Facing Humanity
Q: What are the headline findings and what surprised you the most about the current era of global health data?
The big shift from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases, the persistent disparities between high- and low-income regions, and the rising prominence of mental health and obesity were striking. The data also show how much policy and resource allocation are influenced by what the data reveal.
Christopher Murray on the Global Burden of Disease and the Hidden Threats Facing Humanity
Q: Did you ever as a kid imagine you were going to be running this enormously impactful study from your position, and how did you end up with so many degrees and qualifications?
I grew up in a family deeply involved in global health, which shaped my path. I pursued economics to understand health systems and later returned to medicine, combining public health with clinical training to enable large-scale impact.
Robert Wachter on the Digital Doctor, the Trust Gap, and Medicine's Next Giant Leap
Q: Can you talk a little bit about that?
The discussion explains how AI can move from simply digitizing data to analyzing multimodal information and guiding care, while emphasizing the need to preserve human judgment and vigilance.
Bonnie Maldonado on Smallpox Eradication, Vaccine Hesitancy, and the Return of Measles
Q: How has vaccine skepticism impacted public health policy and what steps can rebuild trust?
Skepticism challenges public health, but involving ethicists, public stakeholders, and transparent communication, along with data-driven policy and accessible information statements, is essential to rebuild trust and improve uptake.
Bonnie Maldonado on Smallpox Eradication, Vaccine Hesitancy, and the Return of Measles
Q: What makes smallpox eradication possible, and why isn't the same approach applicable to other diseases like COVID or flu?
Smallpox allowed elimination because infection with vaccination confers lifelong immunity and prevents transmission; surrounding a case with vaccination stops spread. Most other diseases do not confer sterilizing immunity, and their transmission dynamics require broader, non-targeted vaccination strategies.
