Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interview with Evan Hirsch, MD of EnergyMD
Q: What challenges did you face when transitioning to a remote, online practice, and how did you overcome them?
I faced debt from the transition, mistrust online, and the need to master multiple business areas; joining masterminds, building a distributed team, and learning marketing and sales helped me establish a sustainable online model.
Interview with Evan Hirsch, MD of EnergyMD
Q: What led you to the world of functional and integrative medicine?
I was board-certified in holistic medicine during residency, studied at holistic conferences, and learned from mentors like Jonathan Wright and Alan Gaby; personal family health experiences with chronic fatigue pushed me to pursue deeper environmental and functional investigations.
Interview with Dr. Deborah Matthews, America's Happy Hormones Doctor
Q: What advice would you offer clinicians about building their practice?
Promote yourself and share real events—speaking engagements, media appearances, and client stories—to build authority. Keep messaging simple, speak in layman's terms, and focus on the patient's experience rather than the jargon.
Interview with Dr. Deborah Matthews, America's Happy Hormones Doctor
Q: What are the most essential labs and tests you use to uncover imbalances?
We commonly use saliva or urine cortisol testing to map the daily rhythm, hormone panels that compare blood, saliva, and urine results, and GI maps for gut health, including microbiome markers and inflammation indicators; we also use food sensitivity testing with elimination diets for a comprehensive view.
Interview with Dr. Deborah Matthews, America's Happy Hormones Doctor
Q: What were the biggest early obstacles, and how did you overcome them?
The main challenges were getting peers to understand functional medicine's approach and fitting it into a cash-based model, which initially caused financial strain. I persisted for seven years, kept the vision, built a team, and eventually created a sustainable, patient-centered practice.
