The ETF Story

Bloomberg

The creation story of the first exchange-traded fund is actually the best way to understand how they work. And it's not just educational, it's entertaining. Like the PC and the MP3, the story of the creation of SPY -- which turned 30 this year -- is full of characters, twists and turns, and subplots. In the end, the product launched an industry that's reshaping not just investing but the entire fi... more

SPDR S&P 500, or SPY, is the world’s largest ETF today with about $240 billion in assets, but it wasn’t much to look at when it debuted in 1993. Some days it was on “volume life support,” trading as little as 18,000 shares; there was even talk of pul... more

  • Great Listen

If you’re really looking to understand ETFs (what they are, how they came to be, why they are valuable) this is a great crash course. The whole series from start to finish is less than 2 hours so it’s digestible both in one or multiple sittings.

  • Go right to the last 5 minutes

A nice idea, but gets lost in some weeds. Seems to spend about 33% of the first podcast talking about how thick a report on the 1987 crash was, and trying to outdo each other finding metaphors--Harry Potter, Tolstoy, and, of course, a telephone book. The meat is in about the last 6 minutes, so skip ahead, even then be prepared for oddly extensive physical detail about what Nate looked like. Hope it improves in the future with better editing.
