  • Love this podcast!!

I love the richness and diversity of conversations in the show. And the variety of guests that Maria hosts. It always makes me think about things in a new way, and is usually wildly entertaining too! Other people’s stories….its a good time to get lost in other people’s stories. And to find ways to find empathy.

  • October 2025 Hot Take, Birthday Wish…

I appreciate how Maria names that the data is in, the business case for empathic company cultures has been made.

I agree that it is important to hold empathic leadership as a standard. We don’t have to accept the old school practices of “productivity over people”. I appreciate Maria’s thought leadership in this.

One of the challenges in this movement is to stay empathic towards the leaders who refuse to join us:)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dr. Jay Jakub: Economic Mutuality and the Empathy of Purpose
Q: Can you describe the internal process that makes this work at the unit level rather than just at the corporate level?
Start with an externally facing purpose at the business-unit level aligned with the company's overall purpose, surface ecosystem stakeholder pain points, and implement low-cost interventions that improve social and human capital while tracking impact on earnings and sales.
Dr. Jay Jakub: Economic Mutuality and the Empathy of Purpose
Q: How do you persuade CFOs to buy into this mutual value approach when they're focused on numbers?
By demonstrating that solving real problems and building non-financial capital can deliver measurable financial returns, and by showing concrete ROI examples (like the 17x ROI from the Royal Canin veterinary nurse training) that align purpose with profit.
Kevin Perlmutter: Sparking Brand Desire with Empathy
Q: recap: tell us how you got to this work and what's your passion behind it?
My passion is evolving brand strategy by putting emotional insight at the center to attract and retain customers, combining neuroscience with practical strategy to drive performance.
Ceallaigh Smart: The Power of Being Seen
Q: What makes photography a tool for empathy in communities with limited access to images?
The guest emphasizes that seeing one's own image in a physical photo creates a tangible sense of belonging and recognition, breaking cycles of marginalization and enabling families to share memories across generations.
Ceallaigh Smart: The Power of Being Seen
Q: How does the travel and trip program work and who can participate?
The trips are small, seven-person groups focused on authentic engagement rather than tourism. Participants don't need photography skills—only kindness. They visit schools, clinics, and local families, with translators and local staff facilitating meaningful interactions.
