Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Eli Cranor: Fiction, Football, and the Fertile Ground of Arkansas
Q: Tell me a little bit about professional football in Sweden. I mean, how many teams are there? Is there TV? What would you compare it to here?
Cranor describes a small, club-style league with international players, where Americans were imports and could be paid modestly; his experience included playing in Germany and France, and the culture of the league, travel by ferry, and the transient, adventurous nature of a European stint that broadened his perspective both personally and professionally.
Michael Connelly
Q: What was the book that convinced you to become a novelist full-time, and how did the shift happen?
The book that tipped the balance was The Last Coyote era material and the decision to write full-time came after realizing I could sustain the craft, leading to leaving the newsroom and committing to a novelist's life.
Michael Connelly
Q: Did you have the story in mind before you started working for the paper, or did it come to you after you moved to LA?
I had the character in mind, not the story, and the latter came to me on my first day on the job in LA when I witnessed a major bank vault heist first-hand in the reporting environment.
Carl Hiaasen
Q: What drew you to writing about Florida and its people?
He says writing about a place you deeply care about makes the craft stronger, and his long familiarity with Florida—from Everglades to coastal cities—gives his work its authentic texture.
Alex R. Johnson
Q: What do you think about Elmore Leonard's influence on your writing?
Leonard's character-first approach to storytelling is emphasized as a major influence in Johnson's work.
