  • Entertaining, original

Spencer doesn’t sensationalize for sound bites. I genuinely feel entertained and also like I’m getting original takes from host and guests that educate me about the Utah and pro sports landscape. Love the show!

  • A difficult listen

I think Spence is very smart (he’ll definitely let you know), but he’s hard to listen to. He takes forever to ask his guests questions. He’ll take 4 minutes to ask what a guest thinks about the Coach’s Poll as he’s leading them along, telling them the poll is no good (unless the utes are ranked in it). Spit it out man! Just ask the question and let them talk. If he starts into a question, change the channel for a few mins or fast forward several minutes.

His voice is annoying too. You know how ... more

  • Bad strategy

Dropping loud frantic ads into an otherwise calm conversation is VERY jarring and irritating, like having a schizophrenic in charge who is toggling between Jekyll and Hyde personalities. Makes the next episode easy to skip.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Thurl @BigTBailey on March Memories, Jazz Homestretch, Will Hardy, Future Frontcourt + more
Q: How important is the defensive identity for a young Jazz team, and what does it take to establish it?
Bailey argues that defense starts with individual responsibility and understanding schemes, and that a strong rim protection presence is crucial, but the overall philosophy must be embraced by every player to become a team-wide identity.
Thurl @BigTBailey on March Memories, Jazz Homestretch, Will Hardy, Future Frontcourt + more
Q: What makes Will Hardy the right coach for the Jazz at this moment, and how does his approach translate to the team's identity?
Bailey points to Hardy's communication and culture-first mindset, explaining that honest dialogue about needs and development helps players buy in, improve, and stay mentally engaged even during tough seasons.
It's @Benj_Robinson on NFL Draft, Local Prospects, @GrindingTheMocks Process + more
Q: Which players have notably benefited from the combine according to your data, and who has fallen?
Robinson cites Sonny Stiles as a major winner and notes some players may rise after combine performance, while others who did not participate or performed poorly can see their stock drop; overall, data indicates a nuanced, position-specific impact.
It's @Benj_Robinson on NFL Draft, Local Prospects, @GrindingTheMocks Process + more
Q: How do you view Mel Kuyper and other traditional experts in light of your data-driven results?
He is seen as a mixed figure—often right but sometimes off—and Robinson argues that while Kuyper's insights have value, the data-driven method provides a stronger, more repeatable framework for projecting outcomes.
It's @Benj_Robinson on NFL Draft, Local Prospects, @GrindingTheMocks Process + more
Q: Tell our listeners how Grinding the Mocks originated and what makes your approach unique?
Robinson describes starting while in college, collecting mock drafts since 2018, and using data science to estimate a player's draft range rather than a single position, emphasizing the consistency and predictive value of aggregating many mocks.
