Husband or wife wants a divorce, wife hasn’t had a job in over 20 years, husband controls finances, how do women in this situation protect themselves financially and emotionally … it would b... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Parenting Plans: The Healthy Balance Between Structure and Flexibility
Q: What happens when kids grow and their needs change—how should plans adapt?
Plans should evolve with the children, shifting from quantity of time to quality of interactions, and mediators help families renegotiate schedules as kids age, sometimes returning to mediation for a tune-up.
Parenting Plans: The Healthy Balance Between Structure and Flexibility
Q: Do you ever tell couples to try a schedule for a couple of weeks and review what worked before finalizing?
Yes, mediation often involves trying out arrangements for a short period, then reassessing and adjusting based on how it works for the children and for the parents, rather than locking in a rigid plan.
Divorcing With Teens or Young Adults
Q: how should parents approach telling friends and the community about the divorce when kids are involved?
Communicate with sensitivity to the child's privacy, consider timing, and balance transparency with safeguarding the child's social environment; involve the child in decisions about what to share.
Divorcing With Teens or Young Adults
Q: what are the best things you can do for a high school kid, a young adult, or even a junior high kid?
Keep parental conflicts out of earshot, validate their feelings, provide space as needed, involve them in information-sharing to the extent they want, and ensure they have access to supportive people beyond the parents.
Divorcing With Teens or Young Adults
Q: do you have any insight into what these kids are thinking when their parents tell them they're getting divorced?
Teens and young adults often experience a mix of surprise, depression, and anxiety, especially if they were under the impression that the family had a stable dynamic; clarity about the situation and ongoing support helps them process the change.
