  • Markets as a Video Game

Great topic today. I think the biggest risk will be when the markets inevitably correct 10-20%. The “gamers” won’t have the discipline to ride it out. They will panic and sell everything, to their own demise, but also exacerbating the problem and worsening the market drop. Yikes!

  • Awesome! Could it be longer?

David brings brilliant insights to the economic side of politics and culture, and is very knowledgeable in the subject. My only complaint is the length. I feel like more could be included in a longer format, such as the weekly half hour episodes being a daily occurrence. Awesome show though, keep up the good work!

  • Spot on about US manufacturing job

I have been listening to your podcast for a while, this is the first time I ever comment. Your most recent episode “The Complex Landscape of American Manufacturing: Jobs, Economy, and Policy” is spot on the issue, I couldn’t agree with you more. Thank you for your insights. I hope the people in Washington would listen to this episode, but even if they listen, they probably won’t do the right thing, it’s all about politics.

Q: with margins at historic highs, and not just in the AI and the tech sector, but broad-based, how is that possible with affordability on everyone's mind without triggering a slowdown?
The answer outlines a three-part framework for why margins stay high: first, higher-margin firms gain market share and dominate a cap-weighted index; second, an economy that has shifted toward services—asset-light and IP-driven—supports higher margins; third, productivity gains, exporting leverage, and pricing power help protect margins even as prices rise, with Europe-US differences and a consumer with a strong balance sheet contributing to resilience.
Tuesday - April 14, 2026
Q: Okay, Q&A session in here is intuitive and it's a common one. What about just creating a canal or a pipeline that went over?
The discussion leaned toward the impracticality of a canal or pipeline: geopolitical risk, mountain terrain, enormous cost, and the fact that Iran could still threaten the route with missiles, making a robust alternative unlikely; only smaller reroutes might be feasible.
Tuesday - March 31, 2026
Q: What if the US ceased to export any oil and we just consumed it ourselves?
The host suggests that while it is possible to imagine such a move, it is unlikely and would be counter to capitalist incentives, indicating significant economic disruption would be expected, including job losses and lower profits.
Tuesday - March 24, 2026
Q: What are you watching in the credit markets right now?
I'm watching credit spreads to see if they widen, which would signal increasing risk appetite erosion, but currently they are relatively contained, suggesting the macro picture isn't collapsing and that investors are still seeking income in dividend-payers.
Tuesday - March 10, 2026
Q: What is the defensive thesis for large-cap defense contractors in light of cheaper drone technologies?
The host explains that there is a balanced view: wealthy nations can afford both expensive and cheaper defense systems, and large-cap defense stocks can still benefit by developing or acquiring new technologies if there is clear demand and scalable use cases, while maintaining a bottoms-up, company-by-company evaluation approach.
