  • Markets as a Video Game

Great topic today. I think the biggest risk will be when the markets inevitably correct 10-20%. The “gamers” won’t have the discipline to ride it out. They will panic and sell everything, to their own demise, but also exacerbating the problem and worsening the market drop. Yikes!

  • Awesome! Could it be longer?

David brings brilliant insights to the economic side of politics and culture, and is very knowledgeable in the subject. My only complaint is the length. I feel like more could be included in a longer format, such as the weekly half hour episodes being a daily occurrence. Awesome show though, keep up the good work!

  • Spot on about US manufacturing job

I have been listening to your podcast for a while, this is the first time I ever comment. Your most recent episode “The Complex Landscape of American Manufacturing: Jobs, Economy, and Policy” is spot on the issue, I couldn’t agree with you more. Thank you for your insights. I hope the people in Washington would listen to this episode, but even if they listen, they probably won’t do the right thing, it’s all about politics.

Q: Will the dollar lose its reserve status?
The host explains that for the dollar to lose reserve status there would need to be a viable replacement, and currently there isn't a currency with the same liquidity, uniformity, and global acceptance; the euro is impeded by fiscal fragmentation, while the renminbi is limited by capital controls, making the dollar the predominant choice for now.
Wednesday - June 10, 2026
Q: If you would go half in on the dividend growth portfolio and keep half in the S&P 500 as a hedge, is that a good strategy?
No, that mix is not a hedge because both portions are highly correlated as equity exposure; it tends to dilute the core benefits of dividend growth and doesn't provide the intended diversification hedge.
Tuesday - June 9, 2026
Q: Is Ray Dalio's warning about a confluence of long-term cycles something investors should act on now, or is it largely unknowable?
The host argues that such cycles are not a guaranteed path and that predicting their timing is unreliable; investors should stay grounded in fundamentals and a sustainable investment philosophy rather than overreacting to broad cyclical theories.
Thursday - May 7, 2026
Q: with margins at historic highs, and not just in the AI and the tech sector, but broad-based, how is that possible with affordability on everyone's mind without triggering a slowdown?
The answer outlines a three-part framework for why margins stay high: first, higher-margin firms gain market share and dominate a cap-weighted index; second, an economy that has shifted toward services—asset-light and IP-driven—supports higher margins; third, productivity gains, exporting leverage, and pricing power help protect margins even as prices rise, with Europe-US differences and a consumer with a strong balance sheet contributing to resilience.
Tuesday - April 14, 2026
Q: Okay, Q&A session in here is intuitive and it's a common one. What about just creating a canal or a pipeline that went over?
The discussion leaned toward the impracticality of a canal or pipeline: geopolitical risk, mountain terrain, enormous cost, and the fact that Iran could still threaten the route with missiles, making a robust alternative unlikely; only smaller reroutes might be feasible.
