Reviews

4.8 out of 5 stars from 180 ratings
  • A thoughtful interviewer who can really stick with his more challenging guests.

Despite being outrageously prolific (over 1000 episodes with very serious intellectuals) Ricardo asks questions that as far as I can tell, really break the more complicated subject matter down to its basic principles. How he keeps on top of this much different high level knowledge is beyond me and beyond impressive.

My favorite podcast. Prolific, diverse subjects and long conversations. Listening to Dissenter made me realize how heavily edited and produced most podcasts are. With Dissenter we’re actually listening to the conversation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#1236 Paul Thagard - Dreams, Jokes, and Songs: How Brains Build Consciousness
Q: How do you approach conspiracy theories within the Ames framework, and how do they relate to misinformation more broadly?
Conspiracies can be real or fake; the Ames framework explains misinformation through acquisition, inference, memory, and spread, distinguishing real conspiracies with evidence from fake ones that rely on motivated reasoning and poor information flow. The framework provides a unified way to interpret both genuine and fabricated conspiracies.
#1236 Paul Thagard - Dreams, Jokes, and Songs: How Brains Build Consciousness
Q: What counts as a cognitive error and why is the distinction between psychological and social mechanisms important?
A cognitive error is a pattern of thinking that leads to falsehoods; it includes biases and fallacies from psychology and philosophy. Recognizing these errors helps in understanding how misinformation arises and how to counter it, using approaches like critical thinking and motivational interviewing.
#1237 Timothy Winegard - The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator
Q: What are some historical examples where malaria or other vector-borne diseases altered the course of events?
He cites Alexander the Great in India, the Roman Empire with the Pontine Marshes, Crusades campaigns, and WWII campaigns in the Pacific where malaria influenced campaign timing, troop readiness, and strategic decisions.
#1237 Timothy Winegard - The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator
Q: What motivated you to write a book about The Mosquito and its role in human history?
Winegard explains that his medical-physician father pushed him toward malaria as a compelling lens to tell a broad, accessible history of civilization, aiming to fill gaps in the historiography with a narrative that ties disease to major historical turning points.
#1227 Steven Sloman - The Cost of Conviction: How Our Deepest Values Lead Us Astray
Q: Sure. So what is the premise of your book? I mean, what is this idea about conviction and people's deepest values in the book? You talk about them as sacred values.
The basic idea is that decision making often follows sacred values—values tied to actions rather than outcomes—which leads people to judge actions as right or wrong in an absolute way. This can cause decisions to ignore consequences, fueling conflicts and world problems. Consequentialist reasoning, by contrast, weighs costs and benefits and is more cognitively demanding but usually more nuanced.
