Reviews

4.8 out of 5 stars from 183 ratings
  • A thoughtful interviewer who can really stick with his more challenging guests.

Despite being outrageously prolific (over 1000 episodes with very serious intellectuals) Ricardo asks questions that as far as I can tell, really break the more complicated subject matter down to its basic principles. How he keeps on top of this much different high level knowledge is beyond me and beyond impressive.

My favorite podcast. Prolific, diverse subjects and long conversations. Listening to Dissenter made me realize how heavily edited and produced most podcasts are. With Dissenter we’re actually listening to the conversation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#1249 Melissa Shew: Women and Intellectual Joy
Q: Could you summarize the main barriers that women face in achieving intellectual joy within work and academia?
Barriers include invisible labor, gender bias in student evaluations, misattribution of credit (the authority and credibility gaps), and a cultural expectation that women should be relational and nurturing, which constrains their leadership and intellectual expression. These barriers are compounded post-COVID and reinforced by organizational cultures that undervalue certain disciplines and voices.
#1248 Carles Lalueza-Fox - Identity: What DNA Can Tell Us About Ourselves
Q: What is identity from the perspective of genetics?
Identity is a multi-layer concept combining social, cultural, and genetic dimensions; genetics can illuminate certain levels of identity, especially where historical residence and population movement leave detectable genetic signals, but not all social identities map neatly to genetics.
#1238 Chris Ranalli: What Is Indoctrination?
Q: Can indoctrination ever be epistemically warranted or beneficial?
In some noxious or harmful epistemic environments, indoctrination might protect true beliefs, but it remains epistemically wrongful due to disrespect toward the learner and the suppression of genuine epistemic growth.
#1238 Chris Ranalli: What Is Indoctrination?
Q: What are the main theories of indoctrination discussed, and how does the author's view differ?
The ideological distortion view focuses on manipulating reasons through ideology, the rationality bypassing view emphasizes bypassing rational evaluation, and the closed-mindedness view centers on maintaining a fixed, dismissive attitude; the author argues for a version of closed-mindedness that is structurally induced by instruction and social environment.
#1238 Chris Ranalli: What Is Indoctrination?
Q: Why is it important to study indoctrination from an epistemological and educational perspective?
Because indoctrination can undermine critical thinking, reason-responsiveness, and open-minded development, which are core educational goals and epistemic values in a democratic society.
