Reviews

4.8 out of 5 stars from 177 ratings
  • A thoughtful interviewer who can really stick with his more challenging guests.

Despite being outrageously prolific (over 1000 episodes with very serious intellectuals) Ricardo asks questions that as far as I can tell, really break the more complicated subject matter down to its basic principles. How he keeps on top of this much different high level knowledge is beyond me and beyond impressive.

My favorite podcast. Prolific, diverse subjects and long conversations. Listening to Dissenter made me realize how heavily edited and produced most podcasts are. With Dissenter we’re actually listening to the conversation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#1227 Steven Sloman - The Cost of Conviction: How Our Deepest Values Lead Us Astray
Q: Sure. So what is the premise of your book? I mean, what is this idea about conviction and people's deepest values in the book? You talk about them as sacred values.
The basic idea is that decision making often follows sacred values—values tied to actions rather than outcomes—which leads people to judge actions as right or wrong in an absolute way. This can cause decisions to ignore consequences, fueling conflicts and world problems. Consequentialist reasoning, by contrast, weighs costs and benefits and is more cognitively demanding but usually more nuanced.
#1225 Brittany Andrews: How Policies Against Sex Work Reinforce Patriarchy and Misogyny
Q: What changes would you like to see in the industry to improve conditions for workers?
The guest calls for humane policies that protect consent and ownership, greater public understanding of sex workers as workers, and proactive self-governance to prevent harsher government regulation, along with continued advocacy for rights and safety.
#1225 Brittany Andrews: How Policies Against Sex Work Reinforce Patriarchy and Misogyny
Q: What would you tell an 18-year-old girl who asks how to get started in sex work?
She emphasizes assessing psychological readiness, avoiding naive entry, starting with lower-risk avenues like webcamming to test fit, and building necessary business skills such as platform literacy, marketing, and financial management.
#1225 Brittany Andrews: How Policies Against Sex Work Reinforce Patriarchy and Misogyny
Q: What do you think are the most common misconceptions people have about pornography?
The guest argues that exploitation often stems from stigma and criminalization, not the act itself, and that true exploitation occurs when consent and ownership are denied, whereas pornography can be a consensual, rights-based form of expression when properly regulated and openly discussed.
#1224 Dan Zahavi - Being We: Phenomenological Contributions to Social Ontology
Q: Is consciousness a private phenomenon?
He argues that consciousness has private aspects but must also be understood in light of shared experiences, joint attention, and intersubjective interactions that enable a We-perspective.
