  • Finally a useful podcast for farms!

So many farming podcasts focus on the quality of food or on growing practices. Those are important topics of course, but not many folks are resourcing farmers with practical business/marketing tools in the digital age! This podcast is worth every second!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pet Food For The Win
Q: What are the regulatory considerations when selling pet treats vs. pet food?
Single-ingredient products tend to have fewer regulatory hurdles; multi-ingredient items require more scrutiny and compliance work; farmers should consult resources like the Farmer to Consumer Legal Defense Fund for state-specific guidance.
Pet Food For The Win
Q: Do-it-yourself dehydration vs. partnering with others—when does it make sense to scale or outsource?
Start small to test product viability, then scale as margins improve and volumes rise; dehydrate at home initially, then consider partnerships for high-volume needs and broader product lines as the business grows.
Build Recurring Cash Flow for Your Farm
Q: What finalAdvice would you give farmers aiming for year-round sales through subscriptions and delivery?
Expand product variety with value-added items, push through initial obstacles with persistent marketing, and meet customers where they are—camping events, markets, and online—while making the buying process as easy as possible.
Build Recurring Cash Flow for Your Farm
Q: How did you convert customers from first-time buyers at the market to weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly subscribers?
Conversion happens through direct in-person recommendations at markets, staff guiding buyers to the online store, and providing incentives like easy delivery and flyers with QR codes and store URLs; ongoing engagement keeps customers subscribed.
Build Recurring Cash Flow for Your Farm
Q: What percentage of your overall sales are subscriptions, and are subscriptions the primary delivery method for customers or do you offer pickup at markets as well?
Subscriptions now represent around 30% of online sales, with delivery direct to customers; market pickup exists but is not used for subscriptions due to software and logistics complexity.
