  • Finally a useful podcast for farms!

So many farming podcasts focus on the quality of food or on growing practices. Those are important topics of course, but not many folks are resourcing farmers with practical business/marketing tools in the digital age! This podcast is worth every second!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Expanding your Farm Product with Value-Add Items
Q: How do you determine pricing and manage margins for preserved products vs. fresh produce?
Compare wholesale and retail price points across channels, account for co-packing and labeling costs, and adjust based on demand, with emphasis on keeping some items at higher margins when possible.
Establishing a Wholesale Customer List for your Farm
Q: How do you structure pricing for wholesale versus retail to protect margins?
Use inventory-driven tiers: single-item pricing for small orders, discounted per-unit pricing for larger quantities or cases, and adjust weekly according to what's available. Ensure you prioritize high-value items and avoid overt discounting unless it moves stock that would otherwise go to waste.
Establishing a Wholesale Customer List for your Farm
Q: What strategies would you suggest to a farmer in a secondary market trying to get into restaurant wholesale?
Knock on doors, make both analog and digital outreach, create business cards and flyers, and meet the decision-makers (owners, sous chefs). Build credibility by bringing samples and sharing the farm story, then follow up through multiple channels to stay on their radar.
Why Farmers Should Avoid AI Logos
Q: What would you say to a farmer who's considering an AI-generated logo and how would you contrast with your design process?
She explains that AI logos are quick and cheap but tend to miss the farm's story and offer limited edits, whereas their design process is tailored to each farm, creates custom icons from scratch, asks the right questions, and produces a versatile, story-driven logo.
Why Farmers Should Avoid AI Logos
Q: Can you give us a little bit of an overview? Like how do you guys undertake designing a farm logo today?
Alyssa describes a four-step process: an intake form, a logo review call, edits, and a final packaged deliverable, with emphasis on involving decision makers, defining style, and selecting a main focus to tell the farm's story.
