  • Not bad

The women tend to be very good; less so the men, one of whom suffers more acutely than the other of classical TDS. We’ve all had our fill of that by now, thank you. Let’s focus on our own problems, which are legion.

The paywall is disappointing as well.

  • Great show

This is a fantastic show which does actual journalism - which is fantastic because most podcasts are a bunch of hopelessly ideological verbal diarrhea-fests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Decline of Statecraft
Q: Do you want to talk us through that?
The two officials (A and B) illustrate how work multiplies when you try to cope with rising workloads, leading to a larger bureaucracy through passive expansion rather than efficiency gains, a core idea of Parkinson's Law.
The Generation Delusion
Q: Should politicians be brought back to be grilled by peers for what they did during their time in office?
The host raises the notion of accountability through peers or parliamentary mechanisms, and the guest implies that robust scrutiny is essential but acknowledges the difficulty of balancing accountability with the political realities and long-term costs.
The Broken Police
Q: What changes have occurred to vetting practices, and what is the current state of the vetting process?
The guest describes the vetting panel as having historically overruled vetting decisions and notes that it has since been done away with or reformed, with increased vetting standards under newer leadership and more rigorous oversight.
The Green Myth
Q: What did you sense motivates Neil O'Brien to reframe Conservative policy after years of ambiguity?
He comes across as policy data-driven, focused on practical, incremental fixes rather than sweeping ideological overhauls, with a background in policy work and a preference for measurable outcomes.
