  • Intelligently voiced views

I have been wanting a political podcast which aligns with my political views for some time. Being slightly right of centre with a longing for intelligent and non inflammatory ideas this is refreshing! Both hosts bounce off each other well and I wish we had had this podcast prior to Gove going for the premiership as it may have swung it for me as he comes across well. Both are great!

  • Quite wrong!

Just mind-numbingly soulless, uninspired and insipid, not helped in the least by the frankly insufferable Maddy who really ought to ease up on the ceaseless pearl-clutching and frequent interruptions.

As an erstwhile lifelong Tory, this programme highlights why I’m now a politically homeless voter. Whether from the Speccie or the Tories themselves, this same brand of “radical far-centrism” (in the words of J C Clark, I think) got Britain into this dire state to begin with. Evidently, we are al... more

As a lifelong Tory – once upon a time, anyway – this programme highlights why I am now a voter without a political home. This radical “far-centrism” (in the words of JCD Clark?) got Britain into this dire state to begin with. “We are all Blairites now,” they might well demur. Nor does Maddy’s rel... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: Should Starmer go left or right? – and Thimothée Chalemet’s tragédie en musique
Q: Our first question comes from Joanne Jarrett, where should Keir Starmer go from here, right or left?
The consensus is that Starmer isn't confined to a simple left-right ledger; listeners argue for a disciplined, principled approach—sticking to core priorities, delivering tangible results, and rebuilding trust—rather than chasing ideological labels.
Q&A: Has the Equality Act created a ‘hierarchy of victimhood’?
Q: Are there right-wing leaders around the world that you admire, and what does that reveal about contemporary political leadership?
The hosts offer a nuanced list of contemporary leaders across regions, highlighting pragmatic, pro-market, and security-focused approaches, while noting the complexities and criticisms that accompany popularity and governance in different contexts.
Q&A: Has the Equality Act created a ‘hierarchy of victimhood’?
Q: What is the risk of turning equality into a political arithmetic of protected groups, and how should policy address concerns about merit and fairness?
They warn that over-reliance on hierarchy among protected characteristics can fracture society, advocating a reform path that preserves basic protections while emphasizing merit, equal treatment, and a clear public-interest standard.
Q&A: Has the Equality Act created a ‘hierarchy of victimhood’?
Q: Should the UK government repeal the Equality Act on day one, as suggested by Suella Braverman, or pursue a more nuanced reform?
The hosts acknowledge the Act's original intent to consolidate discrimination protections but argue for pruning rather than total uprooting, suggesting reforms that restore balance between protection and practical governance without triggering a wholesale rollback of rights.
Q&A: Is Rishi Sunak English – or British?
Q: What was your earliest political moment?
I remember the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979, which was a significant moment, but it didn't initially inspire me to pursue politics.
