  • Great 500

I’ve listened to Brendan’s earliest episodes, the later ones and most of his latest episodes and I’ve learned much and been entertained by all of them. He encourages his guests to be relevant and to the point, while at the same time allowing for a free flowing conversation. Congrats for the 500.

  • Too Much

All the interjections in this show destroy the flow of the interviews, as well as any illusion of intimacy.

  • I love this podcast so much

As an aspiring author myself, having access to a constant stream and massive archive of talented writers, talking through how they made their sausage, and all the ups and downs in the process is extremely valuable. And inspiring. Brendan is doing great work here.

  • Great episode

Just listened to your discussion with Isa Adney and thought it was fantastic. You asked her a lot of good questions about the challenges of being a creative person with “dreams” (or “goals,” per your discussion!) and she had such thoughtful answers. I felt so grounded after listening to the conversation. Loved it!

  • Great Podcast

Love this podcast and hearing about others’ creative processes. The editor interviews are especially insightful to me, someone always on the other end of that process. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 501: Julian Brave NoiseCat Aimed for a Woven Text
Q: How do you navigate tough conversations with family when writing about them?
I approach these conversations as a family member and engage in implicit acknowledgment before addressing difficult topics directly.
Episode 501: Julian Brave NoiseCat Aimed for a Woven Text
Q: What is something you adhere to in your craft?
I think you should be writing what you don't know; that is where you find the truth and knowledge in storytelling.
Episode 501: Julian Brave NoiseCat Aimed for a Woven Text
Q: What did it look like at its conception? And how did that evolve over the course of your writing and your research?
I was so lost at the beginning, man. My initial idea was to write a foreign correspondent book about Indian countries, but it evolved into a more personal narrative that included my father's story and the coyote tradition.
Episode 500: Structure, Spec, and Panic with John McPhee
Q: How have you maybe learned to do that for yourself and maybe not look over your shoulder as much?
Fortunately, it never dawned on me that competition would be a good thing.
Episode 499: The Post-Book Malaise is Real with Maggie Mertens
Q: How do you impart structure to your day to get things done?
I use an actual office space, create to-do lists, and break projects into smaller pieces with deadlines to manage my time better.
