The most influential biographies ever written, admired by leaders, creators, soldiers, and thinkers for nearly 2,000 years: Plutarch’s Parallel lives. Essential listening for anyone striving after greatness. Alex Petkas, former professor of ancient philosophy and history, revives and dramatically retells these unforgettable stories for modern audiences. The subjects are statesmen, generals, orators, and founders; pious and profane, stoics and hedonists. The stakes bear on the future of Western civilization. The cost of glory is always great. Fantastic podcast - I love the source material and the depth in which the host covers each of the subjects. Fantastic use of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives to give the listener great context and understanding of the times and people.
Very well done, not big into all the modern day stoic stuff but the history episodes are very informative without being boring or droning. Keeps a great narrative tone throughout.
This is an exceptional podcast. Hard to pull off this level of quality when it comes to Classics. Combines a flair for story with great delivery and full mastery of the historical facts. Most importantly, you can tell that the author has actually *thought through* its subjects and understands these great figures of the past from an ancient — and, crucially, manly and virtuous — perspective. Delighted to see a truly intelligent and *honest* scholar bringing these great lives to a modern audience,... more
I can’t get enough of this podcast. I’m a huge Greek and Roman history fan and I’ve listened to so many podcasts in full. This one is my favorite and it’s not too close. Everything about this podcast is excellent. I will say I only listen to the podcasts that are about Plutarch’s biographies, but wow are they incredible. I’m always looking forward to the next episode!
The biographies are excellent, both in terms of content and style! The coaching element is easily avoidable as it is kept in separate wrap-up episodes. In "The Anabasis", the coaching is merged into the storytelling. This is a pity as the story itself is very exiting but the "winners never quit, quitters never win" jargong is boring.
