  • Useful resource

There are really helpful nuggets throughout these episodes. While I may not do all the homesteading things, I’m interested in doing more, and each episode will have something worthwhile. I enjoy the magazine too.

  • Great guests, host needs to talks less.

Interesting and informative guests, and the topic matter is fantastic. My only complaint after listening to most of the podcasts, is the host talks WAY too much. God bless her - I get she’s excited about her own journey…but most of us are there for the guests.

Ep 19: Susan Poizner on Growing Fruit Trees with Confidence
Q: What should we do at the time of planting? Should we amend the soil or test it first?
Test the soil with a simple assessment or send samples to a lab for a detailed recommendation. If amendments are needed, apply them according to lab guidance and ensure the hole is wide and deep enough for root growth. Bare-root trees should be planted with careful handling, avoiding harsh amendments, and a mulch circle should be used after planting.
Ep 19: Susan Poizner on Growing Fruit Trees with Confidence
Q: When is the best time to actually plant fruit trees?
Bare-root trees are often best; they are dormant and shipped in late fall or early spring. Planting in spring or fall is common, with spring giving the tree a growing season to settle in before winter. Watering and choosing a good site with well-drained soil are emphasized, and soil testing for amendments is recommended when possible.
Ep 15: Don Tipping on Getting Started With Seed Starting (The Easy Way)
Q: Why start seeds indoors instead of direct sowing all seeds?
Starting seeds indoors gives a jump start on the season, protects tender seedlings from cool springs, and helps manage soil and light conditions for a more reliable early growth, which is especially important for warm-season crops.
Ep 14: Lisa Steele on Gardening with Chickens … Symbiotic Systems That Actually Work
Q: How has your perspective changed with the 10th anniversary edition of Gardening with Chickens?
The updated edition reflects a decade of experience across climates, adds predator protection guidance, revises timing for gardens and coop management, and emphasizes adapting strategies to different environments.
Ep 14: Lisa Steele on Gardening with Chickens … Symbiotic Systems That Actually Work
Q: What are practical, day-to-day ways to implement these natural methods on a working farm or home garden?
She explains feeding herbs, using a dedicated herb garden next to the coop, adding herbs to nesting boxes for aroma and pest control, and incorporating garden produce into chicken feed and compost to create a closed-loop system.
