  • April Ryan?

Jen and Norm, I am a loyal Contrarian but April Ryan's interview of Susan Rice was an F. She used outdated phrases like "3rd world country" and was corrected by Susan. She was "gushing" at the beginning with statements like "you sure know how to start an interview". She is not ready for prime time and beneath Contrarian's consistently excellent interviews.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Road to Winning the Midterms, 2028, and Beyond
Q: Can you explain the rationale behind aiming for 46 House races and how the Senate landscape influences that strategy?
The team argues that current winds are favorable for Democrats, but long-term power requires building a durable map across the House and Senate, with selective investments in must-win and reach races, while also building a stronger Senate presence to check Trump-era policies and set the stage for 2028.
The Road to Winning the Midterms, 2028, and Beyond
Q: For listeners unfamiliar with Swing Left, what does the organization's mission look like and what has changed since its founding?
Swing Left started in 2017 to connect volunteers and donors to the most competitive races to win Democratic majorities, expanding from a focus on the House to include Senate, governor, and state races, with a mission to invest in races that can balance power and defend democratic norms.
How Callais Is Already Changing Elections
Q: What are the practical countermeasures you see Democrats needing to pursue at the state level?
Countermoves will have to happen in Democrat-led states by drawing maps that, while controversial, aim to protect minority representation and improve fairness. This likely involves more aggressive organizing, redrawing districts in a way that preserves competitiveness where possible, and leveraging state constitutional provisions and court challenges to push back against partisan gerrymandering.
Why 'All Roads Lead to the South' with Rep. Figures and Rep. Sewell
Q: Are you concerned that voters will be confused by conflicting timelines and maps as the state pushes ahead with new rules before the court decides the case?
Yes, there is concern about voter confusion, and the hosts argue that turnout and clear communication are essential to counter any attempts to depress participation.
Why 'All Roads Lead to the South' with Rep. Figures and Rep. Sewell
Q: Are you optimistic that the three-judge panel will enforce the map given existing findings of intentional discrimination?
Yes, we are optimistic that the court will recognize the findings and uphold fair representation, noting that several judges originally found intentional discrimination and that the appellate path may reaffirm that stance.
