  • A wonderful podcast

The guests and interviews on this show are consistently top notch. The podcast brings a Catholic perspective to current events and to cultural commentary, but never devolves into being preachy or simplistic. If you love the print magazine, as I do, the podcast is a perfect complement … and if you like the podcast, but haven’t read the magazine yet, I encourage you to check out their century of excellent Catholic journalism and commentary.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

On the Altar: A conversation with historian Jonathan Sheehan
Q: What makes Christian sacrifice distinctive, and how does it differ from other sacrificial traditions?
Christian sacrifice is characterized by a self-critical dynamic, the transformation of martyrdom and liturgy into communal practice, and ongoing debates over the nature of worship, salvation, and the atonement, rather than a single universal sacrificial rule.
On the Altar: A conversation with historian Jonathan Sheehan
Q: Why write roughly a 2,000 year history of sacrifice, or why is it important to understand sacrifice and its long history?
The author argues that sacrifice reveals how different cultures imagine the self, community, and meaning, and shows how Christianity both absorbs and redefines sacrifice, influencing later secular conceptions of citizenship, politics, and culture.
Ep. 157 - The Counterweight: MAGA vs. the World
Q: What are some of the key theological building blocks of the Vatican's diplomacy throughout the world?
Theologically speaking, Christians must affirm the body of Christ has no borders.
Ep. 155 - The Counterweight: Against White Christian Nationalism
Q: What will it take for white Catholics to see the idolatry of white Christian nationalism?
It will require a profound reckoning with how this ideology has resulted in real harm and suffering, calling for a deeper commitment to the teachings of the Gospel.
Ep. 155 - The Counterweight: Against White Christian Nationalism
Q: In terms of the battle for the soul of the nation, what are your thoughts on white Christian nationalism?
It's a struggle for the definition of America that inherently ties back to race and whether the promises of equality and justice apply to all.
