  • Excellent insight and engaging

This podcast is really educating me - I only ever heard the headlines about the Vatican and read articles from major news sources. This is giving a much needed perspective - a view from inside- hence the title... They aren't trying to present all viewpoints but are thoughtfully reflecting on the perspectives from Gerry’s experiences and Colleen’s wise questions. Love it and look forward to every episode. Thanks for the great work! I wish for more!

  • What a great podcast

I started following during the conclave. I have been a fan of American media for years and this podcast brought so much insight and renewed joy to my Catholic faith, and Catholic social teaching as well. I cannot wait to continue to listen in the fall. Thank you for all your stories and insightfulness to being a Catholic and what goes on in the Vatican

Vatican Diplomacy 101
Q: Does Vatican diplomacy make a difference in global affairs? Any notable examples?
Marino cites mediation in Chile-Argentina in the 1980s, the reopening of US-Cuba trade relations, and high-profile papal diplomacy in Kosovo and the Iraq War context as examples of the Holy See influencing international outcomes through moral authority and targeted diplomacy.
Vatican Diplomacy 101
Q: What do nuncios actually do day to day, and are there other kinds of Vatican diplomats who aren't nuncios?
The nuncio is the primary Vatican ambassador, serving as the stable link between the Holy Father and local churches, while there have also been lay representatives; the day-to-day blends church leadership with diplomatic duties, including relations with governments and internal church coordination.
Vatican Diplomacy 101
Q: First off, could you tell us a bit about your own path into Vatican diplomacy? What drew you to it and what postings have you held?
Marino explains it was a calling centered on invitation and formation; he entered the Vatican's diplomatic service after a priestly career, studied in Rome, and held posts in places like the Philippines and Uruguay before becoming nuncio to Bangladesh, then moving into leadership of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.
Why Pope Leo was ‘economic with words’ on Iran war
Q: How does Cardinal Parolin's interview reflect the Holy See's current stance?
Parolin's remarks emphasize the erosion of international law, caution against unilateral preventive war, and stress the importance of multilateral diplomacy and the common good as guiding principles for global responses to conflict.
Why Pope Leo was ‘economic with words’ on Iran war
Q: What is the broader significance of Pope Leo's restrained response to the Iran war?
The pope's restraint is framed as a deliberate appeal to diplomacy and conscience, signaling concern about escalation and urging negotiators to seek peaceful solutions within the framework of international law and multilateral dialogue.
