  • SAR interview

The podcast that you did with LVMPD SAR officer is extremely good. I live in Las Vegas and some of the stuff he was speaking about was a good reminder for what to do went out in a red rock, and also just the knowledge that he brought about the structure of LVMPD SARs is amazing. This is a great podcast thank you.

I would definitely like to see more search and rescue interviews. Hearing what to do from the people that are going to come save you is extremely beneficial.

  • Great concept, good interviews

I am 100% behind this project. I really like the thoroughness, length and detail of these conversations, how they meander on, around, off, and back on the title topic, like a real conversation. I don’t listen to every episode, but really appreciate the ones I do listen to when the title or topic catches my interest. The host is also becoming a much better interviewer - I dig following his train of thought as he draws more and more detail out of his guests. Has a bit of the down-home, super in-th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

116 | Paul Rogers: Active Duty Green Beret - Mountain Warfare Training & A 2200ft Fall
Q: Why is mountain training so critical for special operations around the world?
Mountains are where many borders, insurgencies, and critical resources are located, so the ability to infiltrate, observe, and operate in high-angle, high-consequence terrain is essential. Mountain environments also demand a unique blend of technical climbing, navigation, and endurance that translates into more effective partner operations and resilience in harsh climates.
116 | Paul Rogers: Active Duty Green Beret - Mountain Warfare Training & A 2200ft Fall
Q: What changes did you implement to modernize the program when you were in command?
I focused on equipment modernization, moving away from decades-old gear to lighter, safer systems; and on operationalizing instructors, bringing in established mentors from the guide community to reduce risk and ensure up-to-date techniques. We secured funds to retrofit gear and built a formal instructor pipeline to transfer skills to new teachers and students.
116 | Paul Rogers: Active Duty Green Beret - Mountain Warfare Training & A 2200ft Fall
Q: Walk me through what training at Somwtc looks like for someone starting with little mountain experience.
There are two-week basic mountain operator courses in summer and winter, followed by more advanced levels (summer and winter Mountain Operator). Instructors come from Somwtc; progression requires climbing logs, knot- and anchor-precision, and safety checks. The program emphasizes mentorship from AMGA guides and a gradual, but rigorous, escalation, with a strong emphasis on risk management and hands-on field instruction.
115 | Jared Wicks: LVMPD SAR Officer - How Rescues Work, Red Rock Accidents & 30 Years of Climbing
Q: How is the SAR team structured within the agency, and what roles do volunteers play?
The core team consists of seven full-time officers plus a sergeant who also serves on the team, making eight active members. Volunteers fill specialized roles across four sub-teams (lead climb, mountain rescue, dive search, and TEMS). Volunteers include world-class climbers and medical professionals who augment capabilities, particularly for complex rescues where helicopter access might be limited.
111 | Taylor Martin: Alone on Big Walls - Five New First Ascents, Trauma Recovery, & Trans Identity
Q: What kind of climbing inspires you? What kind of mountain pursuits inspire you?
New routing is a really big thing for me right now, and I would like to continue to do that in years to come.
