  • Hit and Miss

Some very interesting episodes, but rather silly ones, too. The one about Celia was just about throwing some of today’s woke vocabulary at her without any real regard to her work or development.

  • I love the show!

I am originally from El Salvador. When I arrived in the US, my family was very fortunate to have a Cuban family embrace us as their own family. We were not only helped by Cubans with food and a house but with anything that we needed to live. We were emersed in the cubab culture from language, history, food and music. This podcast has highlighted many conversions I have had about their Cuban music. I thank you for your and documenting all these eposides.

Much success to your pod cast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The complicated legacy of Willie Colón
Q: What was significant about the collaboration with Héctor Lavoe on El Cantante, and how did it influence perceptions of authorship and royalties?
Lavoe's vocals combined with Colón's lush symphonic arrangements created a defining moment for the duo, while debates over who authored the song and how royalties were allocated highlighted power dynamics within Fania.
The complicated legacy of Willie Colón
Q: How did Willie Colón's image as El Malo shape his early musical career and reception?
The persona was strategically crafted by Colón and the label, blending film-influenced aesthetics with urban aggression to push boundaries and redefine salsa's image.
Violín and hybrid worship practices in contemporary Cuba
Q: How do violines compare with Cajones de Muerto and Violin de Santo in terms of repertoire and performance style?
Violines tend to mix Catholic, Spiritist, and Orisha-derived material, often using Spanish-language songs and secular tunes, with a flexible approach that can include longer, more hybrid sequences. Cajones de Muerto are more strongly linked to possession and Afro-Cuban palo traditions, featuring a more clearly ritual progression toward trance, while Violin de Santo focuses on Orisha worship with formal structures and dedicated ceremonial sequences; all three share a fluid boundary between sacred and secular but differ in intention and intensity of ritual trance.
Violín and hybrid worship practices in contemporary Cuba
Q: What are violines for, and how do they function within Afro-Cuban spiritual practices?
Violines serve as musical offerings to spirit beings and Orishas, blending reverent devotion with musical storytelling. They can honor ancestors or deities such as Ochún, Yemayá, and Changó, while also accommodating broader spiritual atmospheres through popular repertoires and dance rhythms. The format can range from intimate, instrumentally focused performances to larger ensembles that integrate diverse genres.
Ida y Vuelta: Musical exchange between Cuba and España
Q: Can you talk about what you think were the most meaningful musical contributions Spain made to Cuban music?
Spain made significant contributions including major-minor tonality, chord vocabulary, stringed instruments, and poetic forms like decima.
