Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 1.5k ratings
  • Not it.

The host interrupts, finishes sentences, and otherwise features themself too much when the folks interviewed are perfectly able to express themselves. I find the pick-a-card-of-three conceit gimmicky. This podcast has found its way into my stream after others I subscribe to. I don’t enjoy it. 3 stars for the guests, tho.

  • A quick note

David Sedaris’s take on humiliation, that for a writer, when someone humiliates you, it’s like they hand you money, is my captivating thought for the rest of the year at the very least.

  • Too many celebrities

Too many celebrities are tapped for this. My favorite episode is when they go to the street and get answers from people that aren’t polished for interviews. There is a tremendous amount of wisdom and life experience that NPR ignores to favor the famous.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tracee Ellis Ross (Live)
Q: How do you tap into something bigger than yourself?
She talks about building a spiritual life and relying on a personal practice that helps her stay connected to a sense of higher purpose, rather than waiting for external validation or being defined by others' expectations.
Tracee Ellis Ross (Live)
Q: What did you reject as a teenager?
Tracee describes rejecting the trappings of an altered life and not wanting to participate in the substances or social scenes she saw around her, choosing instead to pursue a path that allowed her to own her story and body; she also notes that she was wary of environments that felt like escape from reality.
Dave Eggers
Q: One, two, or three? How much do you rely on the validation of others?
He says he doesn't seek broad validation; one trusted reader or a loved one's reaction is enough, with broader reception being a bonus rather than a measure of success.
John Cena
Q: What truth guides your life more than any other?
Truth is a moving target; one should evolve with new information, embrace change, and stay curious while acknowledging mortality.
John Cena
Q: How comfortable are you with being alone?
Very comfortable, but also values being part of a team and maintaining solitude in healthy doses to recharge and reflect.
