Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Chief of Staff to Product Manager: Sarah Kislak on Following Your Talent
Q: What changes the most when you move from Chief of Staff to Product Manager in terms of scope and influence?
The altitude of influence drops from broad organizational access to more grounded, team-facing execution, requiring you to earn your ideas through storytelling and conviction rather than relying on authority. You must persuade stakeholders, secure resources, and demonstrate impact through measurable outcomes.
From Chief of Staff to Product Manager: Sarah Kislak on Following Your Talent
Q: Do you see cases where a Chief of Staff has to kind of put on that PM hat to say, hey, look, we built the system this way, and I'm recognizing all the inefficiencies in the system?
Yes. The CoS can, and often does, assume PM-like thinking by identifying inefficiencies, advocating for improvements from the ground up, and leveraging close access to leadership to drive changes that align with business goals. The shift is about moving from inside-the-system optimization to designing solutions that improve the system as a whole.
Navigating the Intersection of Public and Private Leadership
Q: How do you compare authority and access in public vs. private sector Chief of Staff roles?
He explains that public sector COS roles often involve formal authority and budgets, while private sector COS roles rely more on influence, access to the board, and the ability to synthesize information across the organization to drive decisions without formal control over all resources.
Navigating the Intersection of Public and Private Leadership
Q: Walk us through a little bit of your path to becoming Chief of Staff for LA.
Nick describes starting in Deloitte and moving into LA city government, where he rose from policy director to chief of staff for a city council member, gaining hands-on experience in policy, budgeting, and team leadership before transitioning to the private sector.
From Boardroom to Therapy Room: What Chiefs of Staff Need to Know About Emotional Support
Q: What practical advice would you give to Chiefs of Staff for supporting their principal?
Don't undervalue the human side of the role; understand that emotional intelligence is key to effective leadership.
