Reacting to the August 2024 catch-up episode. Thanks for the recommendations - how did I miss The Valley of Violence?! Loved the “don’t say it” moment. Your work is always appreciated.

  • Not digging the weird “Morning ZOO!” vibe

I’m a big fan of horror, and consequently of most horror themed podcasts, but I am not a fan of this weirdly out of place vibe.the whole thing is packaged with this out of place rock radio “wacky” morning DJ vibe, or like sports talk radio. From the opening seconds when you are blasted with booming bass, electric guitar, rock radio style intro, to the main host using that fake, bombastic, “radio guy” voice that is typically reserved for talk radio, game shows, and used car commercials, and throw... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP#478 - Eli Roth ( Ice Cream Man)
Q: How did you cast the Ice Cream Man and develop that unsettling, almost friendly neighborhood persona for the character?
Roth explains he pictured the Ice Cream Man archetype as a warm, nostalgic neighbor and then let the actor bring the unsettling edge through precise choices, ultimately choosing Ari Millen for his ability to inhabit that balance without slipping into caricature.
EP#476 - Riley Barker (That's A Bad Idea, camera assistant on Obsession)
Q: What was the most challenging scene to film on Obsession?
The bedroom scene with flowers and the intense party sequence stand out as high-pressure shoots that required careful choreography, multiple takes, and coordination across departments to maintain the mood and timing.
EP#476 - Riley Barker (That's A Bad Idea, camera assistant on Obsession)
Q: What was the shift like from indie YouTube shorts to feature-oriented projects like Obsession?
He describes maintaining a strong visual language—two lights, practicals, and a focus on atmosphere—while gradually collaborating with bigger crews and real locations to achieve a cinematic look.
EP#476 - Riley Barker (That's A Bad Idea, camera assistant on Obsession)
Q: How did your early horror influences shape your approach to cinematography?
Riley talks about discovering Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Conjuring, then explains how a fascination with composition, negative space, and practical effects led him to pursue a visually grounded, almost documentary-like realism in horror.
EP#474 : Inside Obsession with Property Master Luke Cull!
Q: How has your life changed since this movie came out?
It's been crazy—I'm existing in two worlds: the real crew world and this sudden fan interest. I'm grateful people recognize the work across departments and that the project sparked a broader appreciation for behind-the-scenes storytelling.
