This is the perfect podcast for Beatles fans but is great for anyone who loves the popular music of the sixties. I was 9 in 1962 and so was the right age to be dismissed as a screaming girl( which in all fairness I was) but thanks to Paul and Gary I have a much better understanding of what the music is about. Some of the finer points, particularly stuff about production, go right over my head but I still enjoy the discussions. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this and I’ll happ... more
Obviously deeply flawed (and endearingly aware of it) as a concept, occasionally factually wrong*, serving opinions with which I often disagree, while always remaining charmingly agreeable.
In a world of rigid conviction and disturbing certainty, Paul and Garry leave room for cordial disputes, both with each other and with me, the listener. This creates what feels like a three-way conversation, making it my absolute favourite podcast of its type and unique in the way it draws me in.

If you love The Beatles you will enjoy listening to Garry’s ratings and his brother Paul’s reactions to them. A brilliant exploration of this body of work… but… I started listening to this because it was about The Beatles, now I listen because the brotherly banter between Paul and Garry is simply joyous. What wonderful friends these brothers are, and a lesson for us all in how to disagree and still be friends. Honestly they could now be talking about watching paint dry and I would listen.
I’m bingeing on this show having found out all about it via Tim Worthington’s ‘Looks Unfamiliar’ pod. It’s so good to hear the other side of the sixties as well as the Beatles songs. I’m listening to the sixties number ones shows first before the original Beatles shows. I like the respectful but truthful way that the songs are dealt with and some of the unexpected likes and dislikes.
Here’s a view of an 11yr old tween living in very rural Southeastern New Mexico in 1967. Beatles & Monkees were constantly blasted on the radio. The Sinatra song also (do you agree Nancy S can’t really sing?)& the EH song. I never knew the ratings, just knew they were massive hits.
I adore your show, keep up the hard work.

Two musician brothers deeply nerd out on 1960s UK number-one hits, balancing rigorous context with warm, playful banter. Episodes mix chart history, production details, and cross-Atlantic comparisons (UK vs US) while spotlighting how 60s pop culture shaped songs' reception. A standout angle is contextualizing Beatles-era music within its broader era, often recontextualizing familiar tracks through production quirks, chart mechanics, and cultural commentary. The duo's chemistry, accessibility, and breadth—ranging from UK chart history to biographical tangents—make it a strong pick for listeners who enjoy thoughtful music analysis delivered with personality and humor.
