  • Insightful and thought provoking

A thoughtful and thought provoking show. Mr Beinart is well informed and always brings a fresh perspective to the news. His moral compass and humility are so necessary in these dark times. My only criticism is that we can’t subscribe via the podcast app. I don’t use Substack.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Passover in a Time of Inhumanity and Destruction
Q: Why is it important to separate the Jewish state from Jewish religion in today's discourse?
Historical precedents show that religious leadership has sometimes criticized political power, indicating that religious virtues can guide political life without being reducible to it, which helps navigate current tensions between identity and policy.
Passover in a Time of Inhumanity and Destruction
Q: How does Passover speak to contemporary political complexity beyond its ritual observance?
Passover serves as a framework to examine oppression, liberation, and the responsibilities of the polity to remember slavery and to build a future based on constraints and justice, rather than unchecked expansion or conquest.
Passover in a Time of Inhumanity and Destruction
Q: What would you say to those who claim the Israeli government's current approach is aligned with Tanakh and deserves support?
Schorsch emphasizes that Biblical texts can be interpreted to critique political actions as much as to justify them, and that one can acknowledge religious tradition while criticizing state conduct when it contradicts broader moral and ethical principles.
Meanwhile, in Lebanon
Q: What do you think Israel's goals are and what is actually happening on the ground as Israeli forces have moved into Lebanon?
The goals are to disarm Hezbollah, force a favorable Lebanese government policy, and deter ongoing militant activity, all while trying to set a regional order that reduces threats from Iran and allied groups. On the ground, Hezbollah has sustained significant damage but remains capable and is actively resisting, complicating Israel's objectives.
Meanwhile, in Lebanon
Q: Rami, what is happening on the ground in Lebanon today with Israel's invasion? Even the Associated Press, I noticed, is now calling it an invasion.
There are two interlocking dynamics: Israel is pushing into Lebanon to weaken Hezbollah and push the Lebanese government toward disarming Hezbollah and Palestinian camps, while simultaneously leveraging U.S. political pressure to craft a broader security arrangement that favors Israeli and American strategic aims, despite questions about the credibility of the U.S. and Israeli plans.
