  • Insightful and thought provoking

A thoughtful and thought provoking show. Mr Beinart is well informed and always brings a fresh perspective to the news. His moral compass and humility are so necessary in these dark times. My only criticism is that we can’t subscribe via the podcast app. I don’t use Substack.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Speaking Across Divides
Q: Can you clarify the overlap between the criticism of Israel and opposition to the idea of a Jewish state?
There's overlap, but being critical of Israel does not inherently negate the idea of a Jewish state, though specific terms can become litmus tests for acceptance.
Speaking Across Divides
Q: What is the difference between the distinction you're making between critical and negationist anti-Zionism?
The distinction lies in the acknowledgment of Jewish historical rights and the legitimacy of the state of Israel; critical anti-Zionism engages with that understanding while negationist anti-Zionism does not.
Holding Liat
Q: Joel, if I can ask you what, when you got this news, what it was like for you?
Joel reflects on the personal impact of having a family member involved with the violence in Gaza and attempts to shape his critique of Israeli policy while dealing with personal grief.
Holding Liat
Q: Brandon, if I can bring you in, as you were trying to make the documentary and capture that experience, what struck you about this experience that most of us would find in our worst nightmares?
Brandon comments on how the narratives around the hostages were oversimplified, revealing the complex and differing emotional responses from the family, particularly between Yehuda and the other family members.
Holding Liat
Q: Yehuda, I'm sorry, because you're probably asked this so frequently to relive it, but I just wonder if you can talk about what that day was like for you.
Yehuda shares the moment when he knew his daughter Liat and son-in-law Aviv were missing and the subsequent steps taken to reach the US embassy and authorities for help.
