  • Insightful and thought provoking

A thoughtful and thought provoking show. Mr Beinart is well informed and always brings a fresh perspective to the news. His moral compass and humility are so necessary in these dark times. My only criticism is that we can’t subscribe via the podcast app. I don’t use Substack.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

America’s Threat to the World
Q: What precedents shape the current moment regarding international law and US interventions?
There is a bipartisan lineage of justifications that enabled interventions like Iraq and Libya under UN or other institutional language, but the current era dispenses with even the pretence of a legitimating frame, signaling a more overtly coercive imperial posture.
America’s Threat to the World
Q: How do we describe what has changed in the way America relates to other countries under Donald Trump without discarding the rule-based order altogether?
The shift is not merely a change in tactics but an explicit move away from a liberal, rule-based justification toward a system where coercion and power take precedence, while still acknowledging some continuity with past practices that circumvent norms and concentrate power in the executive.
"We are not wanted there."
Q: Why did you want to understand and explain Zionism to an Arabic-speaking audience? What was your curiosity?
Sabri Jiryis expresses a strong desire to enlighten Palestinians about Zionism, highlighting the ignorance he saw surrounding the topic. He aimed to provide clarity to his people about what Zionism entails.
"We are not wanted there."
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to grow up in the aftermath of the Nakba, inside the newly created state of Israel, as a Palestinian?
Sabri Jiryis describes realizing early on that he had no true connection with the Israeli state and felt like a second-class citizen. Over time, he became aware of the significant restrictions placed upon Palestinians, ultimately shaping his realization of being unwanted in his land.
January AMA
Q: How should we view Mark Carney's recent speech regarding the global order?
It should be viewed as a recognition of past wrongs but with a limited moral scope that doesn't address the impact of those orders on the global south.
