We’ll look at the various components of Beethoven’s reputations and place in history.
We’ll look at Beethoven’s last great public work, the Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, completed in 1824.
We’ll look at Beethoven’s final three string quartets: No. 13 in B-flat Major, No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, and No. 16 in F Major.
We’ll focus on the first two of Beethoven’s five late string quartets: the String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127, and the String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132.

I used to love this podcast. I have long studied Beethoven's life and work and how sociopolitical factors influenced him, and previous episodes were so informative and engaging. And now there is a short, cobbled-together episode voiced by AI. The irony of a podcast about one of history's most creative artists relying on this garbage is off the charts. What would Beethoven think? To say nothing of the complete disregard for the environmental impacts. Unsubscribing.
This podcast is great. And you know what makes it even greater for me? Beethoven is my favorite composer. I don’t think there’s ever been a piece of his that I don’t like.
I am grateful for you Beethoven, for creating all this wonderful music for me and others to enjoy and analyze. May your music continue to be enjoyed for centuries by classical music lovers such as myself.

The show offers in-depth, scholarly explorations of Beethoven's major works, blending musicological analysis with historical context. Episodes consistently unpack formal structures, thematic development, and performance practice, often tying pieces to personal struggles, political climates, and reception histories. A standout characteristic is the emphasis on rigorous, lecture-like storytelling delivered by a single host, making it a rich resource for listeners who crave depth and context in classical music.
Noteworthy strengths include a clearly structured approach to large-scale works (symphonies, string quartets, piano sonatas) and detailed musical sketches that illuminate how Beethoven's ideas evolved across his career. The format is p... more
