Autism Classes Deserve Respect with Teacher Angela Cummins
Q: What would stand out to you as five must-do actions to make a school more inclusive?
Angela outlines five core actions: (1) ensure every classroom in the building is treated as part of the school, (2) foster strong, proactive collaboration between mainstream teachers and autism-class teams, (3) actively include autistic students in all school activities and trips, (4) establish predictable, structured timetables and clear communication for SNAs, and (5) celebrate everyday successes to reinforce positive momentum and build trust with families.
PDA and Declarative Language with Julie Holmes SLT
Q: From your perspective, what does declarative language mean in practical terms for parents?
It means switching from directing and questioning to making informative statements about what you observe, which reduces pressure and supports the child's processing and autonomy.
Understanding Energy Regulation with Autism Level Up - Dr Amy Laurent and Dr Jacquelyn Fede
Q: Where should educators or parents start when introducing energy concepts for everyday use?
Begin with the energy meter and the 'person in context' profile, then gradually layer tools, ensuring it's flexible, individualized, and co-constructed with students or children to build comfort and relevance.
Understanding Energy Regulation with Autism Level Up - Dr Amy Laurent and Dr Jacquelyn Fede
Q: How might energy regulation be introduced for someone who is non-speaking or minimally verbal?
We provide a range of meters with different levels, use AAC-friendly vocabulary, and support using objects or symbols (like squishmallows or other familiar items) that map to energy levels to aid comprehension.
Understanding Energy Regulation with Autism Level Up - Dr Amy Laurent and Dr Jacquelyn Fede
Q: But how do you conceptually say, well, this is what energy means and this is how I can use this? If I'm trying to figure out for myself how to use this framework, where would you start on understanding energy?
We start by modeling energy through observable, experiential cues, discussing our own energy levels and signs so others can read them, and then gradually introduce the idea of 'match' versus 'mismatch' to guide practical shifts.
