Achieving diversification in an age of uncertainty
Q: Are investors being rational with the current view of resilience in equity markets despite macro uncertainty?
The panel suggests there are both rational and irrational forces at play: earnings strength supports some rational footing, while high valuations and risk concentration invite caution and a more nuanced, longer-horizon approach to asset allocation.
RBC Brewin Dolphin: We have moved away from the 60/40 portfolio
Q: Welcome both. Right, let's get straight into the questions. So David Hood, strategic asset allocation has historically focused on the 60-40 equity bonds ratio. What do you think about that now? Is it still relevant today?
The 60-40 rule remains a useful shorthand for the average investor, but in practice we need more nuance. The critical point is getting the right asset allocation for the client and understanding that portfolio variability is largely driven by allocation, not just securities choices. We also consider additional asset classes like gold as potential diversifiers while using a portfolio optimizer to assess risk and reward before translating outputs into robust, client-ready portfolios.
Why active fund management still has a role to play in portfolios
Q: So Cranley, one of the distinct features about Church House is your use of in-house funds, particularly in fixed income and multi-asset portfolios. How does that approach benefit your clients?
It gives clients transparency and control since the private client team can review holdings and decisions in detail, reducing reliance on third-party reports and minimizing style drift, while also providing cost and tax efficiencies.
Inflation protection a major priority for Pictet’s multi-asset boss
Q: Given the broadening inflation picture, what regions or sectors look most attractive for long-term opportunity?
Regions with structurally attractive real yields and energy security, like Brazil, and sectors tied to AI infrastructure and energy efficiency, where bottlenecks and pricing power can sustain earnings growth.
Inflation protection a major priority for Pictet’s multi-asset boss
Q: So, Shaniel, how is inflation shaping your thinking on the balance between inflation-protected securities and nominal bonds?
We treat inflation as a core state variable and prefer strategies that can defend capital in real terms, leaning towards higher real yields and selective nominal exposures where policy and growth dynamics support it, especially in Europe versus the US.
