  • Love this show!

I listen to true crime constantly and I was getting to a point where it felt like if I haven’t already heard about it, it’s probably not that interesting. This show has proven me wrong! For example, I thought, who needs another series about Jack the Ripper? Turns out, I did! I needed it!

But why did I pay for a subscription and there are still ads? How can I listen with no ads ever? Where do I pay for that? Please… help…

  • Unique and entertaining

I recently stumbled upon this podcast and it has become one of my favorites because of how well and thoroughly researched each episode is. It contains unique anecdotes, for example, the episode of Josephine Baker, where they talked about the guy going down the river Seine in Paris on a kayak - it’s little details like that that make this such a great podcast.

  • One of the best podcasts out there

Gavin did an episode of Most Notorious and I am so glad he did. This podcast is amazing. I not only echo the other five star reviews in terms of research, but the writing is OUTSTANDING. It’s clever and witty and I am often just laughing out loud at some of his observations. I don’t get the other criticisms of his narration; it’s wonderful. I am hooked on season 3 and my other true crime podcasts are languishing in my queue.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Renegade Chevalière: Beaumarchais Part Two (Spy vs. Spy)
Q: Category number two, Courage, Chad, how much bravery did Beaumarchais show in the face of danger?
Chad assigns a nine again, highlighting his willingness to travel across Europe, confront empresses, and navigate dangerous political situations, while acknowledging some risk around specific episodes like the Vienna incident.
The Renegade Chevalière: Beaumarchais Part Two (Spy vs. Spy)
Q: Category number one, effectiveness. Chad, on a scale of one to ten, how effective was Beaumarchais as a spy?
Chad rates Beaumarchais at nine, noting that while he had near-perfect success in many missions, he did have a notable misstep getting arrested in Vienna and needing rescue, which prevents a perfect score.
Mata Hari, Fatal Lover (Spy vs. Spy)
Q: What factors contributed to Mata Hari becoming a scapegoat in the French conviction?
Her Dutch nationality, divorce, glamorous reputation as a dancer and courtesan, and prior associations with powerful men created a perfect storm for blame, making her a convenient symbol of espionage and moral panic during a difficult wartime period.
The Royalist (Spy vs. Spy)
Q: What drew you to the story of Grace Elliott for this episode?
We wanted to explore how a figure connected to the arts and high society navigated one of history's most chaotic periods, showing that art and portraiture intersected with espionage and survival.
The Nazi and the Psychiatrist
Q: What did Kelley conclude about Göring based on his responses to the Rorschach tests?
Kelley found Göring's responses reflected narcissism and a tendency to focus on himself rather than the larger world.
