  • Love this show!

I listen to true crime constantly and I was getting to a point where it felt like if I haven’t already heard about it, it’s probably not that interesting. This show has proven me wrong! For example, I thought, who needs another series about Jack the Ripper? Turns out, I did! I needed it!

But why did I pay for a subscription and there are still ads? How can I listen with no ads ever? Where do I pay for that? Please… help…

  • Unique and entertaining

I recently stumbled upon this podcast and it has become one of my favorites because of how well and thoroughly researched each episode is. It contains unique anecdotes, for example, the episode of Josephine Baker, where they talked about the guy going down the river Seine in Paris on a kayak - it’s little details like that that make this such a great podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Witch of New York (Beach Reads)
Q: What makes Polly Bodine's case stand out in American true crime history?
It combines extraordinary media sensationalism, gender norms of the era, and a highly ambiguous set of circumstantial clues, making Bodine both a sympathetic fallen woman and a suspect whose guilt is never fully settled; the case was amplified by woodcuts, sensational journalism, and later literary pundits like Poe.
The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum (Beach Reads)
Q: What does Mandelbaum's encounter with the stage and public perception reveal about her as a figure?
Her public persona, amplified by plays and newspapers across the country, shows how fear, fascination, and admiration coexisted around her, making her both a notorious criminal and a symbol of a modern, ambitious immigrant woman who challenged social hierarchies.
The Talented Mrs. Mandelbaum (Beach Reads)
Q: What drew you to the idea that a department-store front could conceal a crime operation?
The department-store front was the perfect metaphor for the era: legitimate surface with a hidden, efficient back-end that managed a vast flow of stolen goods—silk, diamonds, and other valuables—through an organized system.
The Most Beautiful Woman of the Nineteenth Century: Countess of Castiglione (Spy vs. Spy)
Q: On a scale of one to ten, how effective was the countess as a spy, and did she succeed in her mission?
They agree she succeeded in seducing Napoleon III, which was crucial, but overall impact on unification and intelligence is less clear, leading to a mixed but strong score of seven.
The Man Who Stole the Gods (Beach Reads)
Q: What ultimately happened with the Kneeling Attendance pieces in the Met, and what does that say about repatriation today?
The kneeling attendants were repatriated to Cambodia after investigations into their origin, signaling a shift toward greater accountability among major museums and indicating a trend toward proactive restitution even when the provenance is murky or contested.
