  • Good, but…

I love your show, but I have never yelled at a podcast more than your guest talking about the Exorcist. As an LCMS Lutheran, there are so many details he got very wrong about the Lutheran aspect of it. We absolutely believe in possession, participate in exorcisms (my former Pastor went to Madagascar to observe and participate in them relatively recently), heck—our St. Louis seminary has a room walled off to this day because that’s where an exorcism tied to this case was performed. Which is disap... more

  • Terrible guest

I love this pod and am not going to change my rating. But, as a Grand Rapidian, I was looking forward to Allie Seibert's story, but was very disappointed. She essentially told the whole story - why read the book? And here we have another case of just because someone can write doesn't mean they can speak. She has a grating voice and terrible style.

  • IMO Steve Hodel proved his father knew ES and perpetrated her undoing. Not buying this take on her murder. Still great interview questions, sadly very biased answers.

  • 5 stars!!

Eric, I have left you a review before, but I just had to tell you that your interview with Chris Pouy is fascinating!! I remember seeing his mother on TV as a child! Thank you for having him on to tell his story, that should be a much more well known story. I hope it gets the attention of a producer because it would make an excellent movie or series!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

439: The Curse of the Blumenthals w/ Phyllis Karas
Q: You mentioned your interest in your Whitey Bulger book and how that project came about. How did you decide to tackle that subject alongside Curse of the Blumenthals?
I chose to write about Kevin Weeks and Whitey Bulger because the family connections and the broader Boston crime world offered a stark contrast to the Blumenthals' story, and the process of getting facts right—through DEA agents and legal teams—was a fascinating mirror to the meticulous research I did for Curse of the Blumenthals.
438: The Capone's Vault Fiasco w/ William Hazelgrove
Q: What was the turning point in how audiences viewed live broadcasts after Capone's Vault?
It demonstrated that audiences valued the journey and spectacle over a guaranteed payoff, effectively birthing the modern reality-TV ethos and the idea that the ride itself could drive engagement and ratings.
438: The Capone's Vault Fiasco w/ William Hazelgrove
Q: What were the prevailing theories about Capone's money before the vault broadcast, and how did those theories shape the event?
Theories ranged from buried treasure in various hideouts and underground tunnels to money spent or hidden in safety deposit boxes nationwide; these theories kept the hype alive and fed the narrative that something could be found.
438: The Capone's Vault Fiasco w/ William Hazelgrove
Q: Was this book an extension of your interest in Capone-era Chicago history, and how did that lead to Capone's Vault?
Yes, the project grew from a long-standing curiosity about Capone and the Lexington Hotel, tying in archival backstories, media history, and the lore surrounding Capone's money and hideouts.
437: The Journalist & the Serial Killer w/ Mark Braude
Q: How did you decide to braid Flanner's and Weidmann's stories together, and what does this dual narrative reveal about journalism and history?
Braude describes shaping the book around two parallel narratives—Flanner's reportage and Weidmann's crimes—to show how a journalist can influence public perception while a killer's acts reflect societal currents, and how history judges both over time.
