  • Good Anglo pulse

A great podcast to stay up to date on what the technocrat, anglo, pro-American hegemony, Washington blob thinks about us in LatAm.

  • Great reporting and discussion, limited perspective

This is a very good podcast in which the politics and economics of Latin America are discussed thoughtfully. I learn something new from every episode. My only quibble is that the guests on the show tend to be almost exclusively from a center to center-right perspective on the political spectrum. This makes sense given that the podcast is published by Americas Quarterly, which in turn is published by the Society of the Americas. Still, I would appreciate hearing from a wider range of perspectives... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Brazil, Colombia and a Regional Case for Optimism
Q: What about Cuba and Venezuela in the near term?
Cuba remains destitute with a fragile private sector keeping essentials afloat, while the Venezuela situation depends on U.S. policy alignment; elections are unlikely in the next year, with longer horizons potentially opening space for changes under pressure to stabilize economies.
Brazil, Colombia and a Regional Case for Optimism
Q: How do you view Colombia's polarized race and the main candidates?
Petro's left-leaning agenda faced implementation challenges and a volatile governance style, while Cepeda could push a more cohesive left program but may worry business interests due to ideological focus; the center-right is trying to consolidate around Paloma Valencia.
Brazil, Colombia and a Regional Case for Optimism
Q: What kind of environment is this election taking place in Brazil right now?
The race is tightly contested, with Bolsonaro's coalition fragmented on the right and Lula's left united; growth remains solid but fiscal concerns persist, and public sentiment is cautious rather than enthusiastic.
Cuba on the Brink
Q: What is the latest read on the Trump Administration strategy regarding Cuba?
The assumption seems to be to wait for the situation in Cuba to worsen, leading to societal collapse or uprising against the regime.
Cuba on the Brink
Q: As you noted during previous waves of social unrest and political protest, how are they managing the risk of a social eruption this time around?
The government is very concerned about protests, knowing the current U.S. administration could respond aggressively to unrest.
