  • Amazing

For a small team this podcast really delivers! I have been listening years and am constantly impressed with their research and presentation of sometimes distressing material.

They manage to traverse the fictional tragedies to the real ones of a range of severity with sincerity that can’t be faked. Thank you for your amazing content.

  • Jumped the shark with Garfield

This episode was honestly terrible. The host could hardly read from a Wikipedia page, mispronounced everything and obviously didn't do anything to prepare. This topic just didn't have an hour of content and should not have been aired. Ugh.

  • Hello from your past

I LOVE this show! I don’t remember how I found it. I do remember hearing an ad and thinking it sounded like a happy version of a sad podcast I love and I’m totally right, to the point where when one of you covers something the other already did I think I’ve heard the episode before, but I listen anyway don’t worry.

Anyway when I found you in 2023 I decided to start at the beginning so I listen to a few a week. I’m currently in June of 2022 so if you read this review I probably won’t hear it for... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

REWIND - NYC BLACKOUT OF 1977: WHO IS TO BLAME
Q: What is your initial take on the main causes of the blackout?
We weigh lightning, the heat, human error, and organizational failures, then decide what to blame, starting with the most dramatic as potential culprits and then whittling down to structural issues.
REWIND - The Aftermath: NYC Blackout of 1977
Q: So can you start off by setting the stage for us? And I know this is a big question, but what kinds of social and economic challenges was the United States going through in the early, mid 1970s?
Jim Goodman explains the era as a convergence of energy crises, inflation, urban strain, and post-Watergate political fatigue, with NYC facing bankruptcy-era pressures, a fragile social contract, and a city already dealing with crime and retreating services.
The Aftermath: Great Train Robbery of 1963
Q: And how did he get involved in this?
Patrick McKenna was an ordinary postman with no training in security or trains; his name entered the frame through later hypotheses and narrative embellishments, but the historical record shows he had no insider role and likely was misrepresented in some accounts.
The Aftermath: Great Train Robbery of 1963
Q: Did the events that occurred on August 8th, 1963, the Great Train Robbery, go as planned?
Not exactly; it was well planned, but they encountered timing issues, driver coordination challenges, and time constraints that prevented unloading the full amount, though they still secured a substantial portion.
The Aftermath: 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War
Q: Why did Britain decide to install Hamood instead of Khalid after the war?
Britain preferred a ruler who would align with protectorate goals and maintain greater control, whereas Khalid was seen as less cooperative, and the British wanted a stable, compliant leadership under their influence.
