  • Thoughtful, informative, and interesting!

I appreciate The Alabaster Jar because it is so different from other Christian podcasts for women. Smart, educated women chat and interview other smart, educated women about amazing, often overlooked women in the Bible and early church. I was lucky enough to take a course on NT women from Dr. Lynn Cohick, and I love that I can continue to learn from her on this podcast. I always end my time here feeling informed, encouraged, and seen.

  • Thank you Dr Cohick!

I met Dr Cohick at Kerygma this year and my eyes have been opened to the woman’s role in church leadership. I had no idea and honestly, looked down on women in leadership roles in the church. But God has been teaching me & “expanding my territory” in unfathomable ways. Thank you for your faithfulness & honesty in your journey. I love the guests on this podcast & the topics discussed. Thank you!

  • Fantastic

Where has this podcast been my whole life!? It is like a cool breeze on face. It is so exhausting to feel that wall of invisible distrust of the feminine…why is it the same in the church as in the rest of the population? Isn’t Jesus our example? There is so much to mourn…but wow do I thank God for you Dr. Cohick and Dr. Imes.

  • Excellent and informative

I met Lynn at Kyrigma 2 yrs ago. I have followed the podcast since. I love it. I have been able to use the knowledge gained to teach my class at church. I also have been encouraged by the understanding of what women really add to the body of Christ.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S6 E40 | Dr. Scot McKnight and Adrienne Gibson | How Trauma-Informed Ministry Heals the Body of Christ
Q: How does trauma shape the way Paul interacts with the Corinthian church?
Paul's trauma shows up as a mix of frustration and transparency; his letters reveal a leader who pushes back firmly yet remains emotionally exposed, highlighting how trauma can coexist with faith leadership and pastoral care.
S6 E35 | Dr. Cyndi Parker | Hidden Women, Holy Places: Mary of Nazareth and Anna in the Temple (Part 1)
Q: How would Mary have experienced the angel Gabriel's visitation, and how might people in Nazareth have understood it?
Parker notes that this invitation was profoundly personal and mysterious, not a communal event. Mary's faith, readiness, and swift assent reflect a deep trust in God, even if the full implications were not fully foreseen. The moment showcases how God often chooses unlikely individuals from small places to participate in his plan.
S6 E35 | Dr. Cyndi Parker | Hidden Women, Holy Places: Mary of Nazareth and Anna in the Temple (Part 1)
Q: Could you help us understand Mary's world better so that we don't make anachronistic claims about her life in the first century Jewish context?
Parker explains that Mary grew up in a tightly knit, scripture-soaked Nazareth, where engaging deeply with scripture and community expectations shaped her. She moved from childhood memory of Psalms to a mature faith that embraced God's call, countering modern stereotypes about adolescence and present-day teenage norms.
S6 E34 | Coffee with Cohick: Listener Q&A, Cultural Context of Adoption, and Naming in the Bible
Q: Is it reasonable to interpret Adam's naming of Eve after the fall in Genesis 3 as an act of power or dominion?
Naming does not refer to authority, but rather is about identifying and creating order.
S6 E34 | Coffee with Cohick: Listener Q&A, Cultural Context of Adoption, and Naming in the Bible
Q: How would Jews and Gentiles hear God's message regarding adoption as children of God?
Both Jews and Gentiles would think of inheritance and family, but the practices and significance of adoption differ greatly between them.
