  • Excellent show w/ Ruth Ben-Ghiat!

Another fabulous interview with Ruth, on 8/24. I subscribe to her Substack “Lucid” and try to catch her every chance I can, as she has invaluable insights into these turbulent times of trump and trumpism. Her info never gets old or repetitive, and indeed we need continual reminders as well as the latest information she offers in tracking authoritarianism around the world.

    THANK YOU!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matt Gertz on the Fox News presidency
Q: Why did CBS News undertake a shift toward a more right-leaning audience, and why might that be a doomed strategy?
The move is driven by audience fragmentation and the belief that conservatives will seek content closer to Fox, but appealing to a right-leaning base risks alienating existing liberal viewers and undermines long-term credibility, making it a fragile recalibration.
Matt Gertz on the Fox News presidency
Q: What do you see as the Fox News role within the broader right-wing ecosystem today, given the rise of podcasts and independent platforms?
Fox remains a central one-way conduit that shapes the president's messaging for a large audience, but its relative influence has waned as podcasters and online platforms build alternative, engaged communities that draw people away from traditional linear TV.
The great GOP butt-whoopin’ of 2025
Q: What do you make of the turnout differences between various elections?
The turnout was generally lower in specific elections like the Georgia Public Service Commission races, but other areas saw huge democrat turnout, indicating a potential shift in voter engagement.
Trump’s assault on speech + the looming shutdown
Q: Do you think there's any chance Republicans would nuke the filibuster?
It's uncertain; while some Republicans might see it as a long-term risk, they could be motivated to act if they feel threatened.
Wisconsin politics with Dan Shafer
Q: How do you assess Tony Evers' political success so far?
He has managed to keep some rural voters in the Democratic coalition while expanding margins in pocket areas like Dane County, winning by larger margins than before.
