  • Not Spacy but love the Podcsdt

I listen to the first half of this podcast every weeknight. I am not in the space industry and know little about it but I find the news updates fascinating. I feel like I’m learning and I had no idea of the rich news about space there is. Sometimes I listen to second half of the show but not always. A lot of that is a little “in the weeds” for me.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Encore: The atmospheric impacts of satellite re-entry.
Q: What were you specifically researching in the last episode before this update?
The focus was on the risk of current disposal practices for satellites and the potential environmental and atmospheric impacts of satellite reentry, including how much metal oxide could be produced and how regulatory timelines interact with scientific evidence.
Securing satellites already in space, with journalist Shaun Waterman.
Q: Would you mind walking me through a little bit about how you put this article together and what your pitch was for creating this?
I explained that the piece built on a prior report from the CyberSat conference and followed the DHS Science and Technology Division and Aerospace Corporation initiatives on open-source on-orbit cyber detection and response, illustrating how space is becoming a cyber-enabled domain and why a shift toward on-orbit capabilities matters for defense and industry.
Space supply chain pressures.
Q: Doug, why don't I go to you first for closing thoughts?
Doug emphasizes this is an exciting but challenging time with strong demand for space and urges continued collaboration between government and industry, investment in the supply base, and renewed focus on building a robust, transparent value chain.
Bonus: Brandon Karpf talking about "Japan’s space systems face growing cybersecurity threats."
Q: I'm interested in your take on this. Can we start off with some high-level stuff here? I mean, where does Japan stand when it comes to how they're dealing with the challenge of security in space?
Japan is elevating space security as a core national priority, formalizing standards, expanding cyber defense capabilities, and accelerating public-private collaboration to modernize space architectures and build domestic capacity.
From cyberspace to space-cyber.
Q: So, Ethan, what do you think about the mechanics of satellite internet and how it reaches ground users?
There are two main categories of satellite internet, LEO and GEO, with LEO providing closer coverage and faster potential, and the network often forming a mesh through many small satellites to route data efficiently back to ground stations.
