  • Not Spacy but love the Podcsdt

I listen to the first half of this podcast every weeknight. I am not in the space industry and know little about it but I find the news updates fascinating. I feel like I’m learning and I had no idea of the rich news about space there is. Sometimes I listen to second half of the show but not always. A lot of that is a little “in the weeds” for me.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The hidden risks in space supply chains.
Q: What practical steps can cyber professionals take if they want to move into space security?
Focus on defense in depth, continuous monitoring of manufacturing and assembly lines, maintain software/firmware integrity across OT devices, and demand end-to-end visibility of the entire supply chain, including sub-tier suppliers and hardware components.
The hidden risks in space supply chains.
Q: What makes space supply chain risk different from traditional IT supply chain risk?
Risks are amplified by the interdependence of hardware, firmware, software, and GTM processes across space, launch, and ground segments, with many legacy components and a move toward rapid satellite manufacturing that increases the potential for glitches and insider threats.
Preparing space for Q-day.
Q: How should industry approach 'future-proofing' space systems against quantum threats?
Adopt a crypto-agile, architecture-first approach that separates key generation and delivery from the data plane, build a flexible governance/control plane, and design with the expectation that new algorithms will be required and must be deployed without disrupting service.
Preparing space for Q-day.
Q: What are the key threat vectors in space related to quantum that executives should understand?
Threat vectors include inter-satellite authentication to prevent spoofing, ground-to-satellite cryptographic handshakes that can be attacked, and the challenge of hardening in-space encryption given long asset lifespans and limited ability to repair on orbit.
Preparing space for Q-day.
Q: Could you give me a sense of why quantum is getting so much emphasis now, especially in relation to space?
The convergence of rapid quantum developments with aging space infrastructure creates a pressing need to implement crypto agility and post-quantum security, since satellites cannot be easily updated and must be prepared to authenticate inter-satellite and ground communications using new algorithms as they are standardized.
