  • Ahhhmazing!

I have been an elementary school PK-5th grade teacher for 10 years. As I have seen the growing numbers of neurodiversity in my students I was looking for resources to help me help my students. When I found this podcast, it completely transformed my style of teaching for all of my students (neurotypical included!) I have shared this podcast with all of the parents of my neurodiverse children and it has been SO helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, knowledge, teaching tips, and ... more

  • Teachers, think again

I can really see why teacher would like this. Lots and lots of strategies based in behaviourism from someone who is prolific in the area. Unfortunately I've not heard too much content that is ND affirming, that really explains the importance of relational safety at school, and that aligns with a current evidence base. Teachers, if you want strategies that will get you through the year keep listening; but if you want to invest in the long term outcomes for your neurodivergent students...go elsewh... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SLP 295: What does that Acronym / Abbreviation Mean? I have created a cheat sheet for you
Q: What's the difference between ADHD and ASD?
ADHD behaviors can appear similar to autism, but the cause of the behaviors differs. Children with ADHD know what turn-taking is, while those with autism may need direct teaching.
SLP 295: What does that Acronym / Abbreviation Mean? I have created a cheat sheet for you
Q: What about this PDA then?
PDA stands for Pathological Demand Avoidance. It's a behavioral profile rather than a formal diagnosis, describing people who avoid everyday demands to an extreme.
SLP 295: What does that Acronym / Abbreviation Mean? I have created a cheat sheet for you
Q: Can you give my listeners some labels, diagnostic terms that they might hear and explain what they mean?
When a child gets a diagnosis of autism, they're given a level of functioning from one to three, with level one being high functioning and level three being severe.
SLP 292: Dean Beadle shares his lived experience of embracing his Autistic Identity and finding Autistic Joy
Q: What age did you find out you're on the spectrum, Dean?
I found out I was autistic in 1998 when I was nine years old through friends of my mother rather than her telling me directly.
SLP 292: Dean Beadle shares his lived experience of embracing his Autistic Identity and finding Autistic Joy
Q: Dean, can you share what that means to you?
For me, autistic identity begins when you give yourself permission to be who you already are, dismissing societal pressures.
