  • This is my favorite art-related podcast

I first discovered Studio Break a couple years back, when I’d returned to college for art and was spending long weekend hours in the studio drawing still lives with charcoal. It had a large backlog of episodes to fill that time, and it featured artists talking about art…what could be better when you’re having to determine how to draw a flat piece of paper in perspective?

The best thing about this podcast is that host David Linneweh does not come to the mic with an agenda. He is not flogging a ... more

I’ve been taking in a couple episodes a day as a necessary dose of painting talk. I really appreciate the focus on non-coastal artists. I’ve discovered some gems from the backlog like Ben Duke. Thanks for putting this out there.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

GRETA KRESSE
Q: What role does color play in conveying time, humidity, and place in your work?
Color is used to carry meaning and to evoke specific atmospheres—like late-summer humidity in Arkansas—often employing limited palettes to heighten tension and focus the viewer on core abstractions.
GRETA KRESSE
Q: How did your undergraduate experiences influence your shift toward landscape painting?
Her time at studio programs and residencies, plus working with mentors, showed her the value of pushing beyond initial impulses; the landscape studies during summers became a catalyst for integrating landscape into figurative work.
SAM KELLY
Q: How did you start on your path to art and what role did education play?
Kelly explains growing up in Dayton, discovering art in college through hands-on studio work, and how supportive mentors and a non-traditional approach to learning shaped his move into painting and teaching.
Nick Satinover 3
Q: How did the In Cahoots residency influence your approach to making prints and working with relief techniques?
The residency provided a slower, more material-focused environment that encouraged fully realized, editioned relief prints, shifting from COD's public-facing demands to a more introspective, production-oriented process.
Nick Satinover 3
Q: Tell us a little bit about where you're from, where you went to school, and where you're currently teaching now.
Nick describes growing up near Dayton, Ohio, his path from graphic design to printmaking, and his current role as a full professor at Middle Tennessee State University, illustrating how place and education shaped his studio practice.
