  • Focused

I would love if he asked much more about the artist’s process from start to finish and how they come up with their imagery, and in general what they think about while in the studio. It would be great if he started with that and THEN meandered. As is, sometimes the conversation never leads to substantive studio talk. I also wish he spoke less about himself and focused more on the artists.

  • It’s a joy!

I am so happy to have stumbled upon this podcast. Host Brian Alfred brings genuine warmth and gentle humour to these compelling, conversations with artists and effortlessly creates an intimate airspace that always leads to something golden (…see what I did there ;) at some point in the dialogue. Alfred gets under the surface of the artwork without pretension which allows the listener to have an often very relatable experience of what it is to be an artist making work today.

  • Amazing

I love this podcast! The inclusion of music alleviates the focus on purely the visual which could get oppressive. An interesting take. All of the stories and personal histories are wonderful to hear and are inspiring. Occasionally the host’s view towards Christianity gets a bit bitter but he’s otherwise kind, generous, and a funny, delightful interlocutor👏.

This is without a doubt my favorite contemporary art podcast. I feel like I’m in the same room as Brian & the artists he interviews. Conversations wander in many directions but always include educational influences, stories of growing up & dealing with issues that helped & hindered artistic careers & music. Brian is the ultimate interview. He knows when to just listen & how to draw out ideas from introverted guests. His liberal arts background as well as working artist life style really shines i... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Marina Adams
Q: Last question. If you had to pick Blinky Palermo or Anne Truitt, which do you like more?
The guest declines giving a preference in this moment.
Xavier Tavera
Q: How do you balance controlled setups with the serendipity of photography?
There are moments of meticulous planning and moments of spontaneous interaction; both coexist to create images that feel authentic and charged with narrative energy.
Xavier Tavera
Q: What drew you to photograph Dolores Huerta specifically, and what was the experience like?
The opportunity felt monumental; after long efforts and negotiations, being in the room with her and hearing her stories made clear why this work matters and how a single portrait can carry a lifetime of history.
Xavier Tavera
Q: How did sports, music, and community influence your path into photography?
They formed the social and cultural fabric that fed my eye—sports taught timing and movement, music taught rhythm and mood, and community provided the humans and stories that I want to document.
Claudia Doring Baez
Q: How did Claudia transition from working in film to focusing on painting?
She shifted after a period of working in film sets with Martin Scorsese as a PA, recognizing the intense coordination required in cinema and choosing to pursue painting and formal art education, which eventually led to advanced study at the New York Studio School.
