  • Deliberate & Thoughtful

Excellent podcast for artists and scholars alike. The episode on Benjamin and Klee's Angelus Novus is especially good.

  • On the Story of Walter Benjamin’s Final Days

I’m Benjamin’s granddaughter — one of Stefan’s daughters — and I listen to a lot of podcasts and read a lot of material about my family. I seldom write reviews, but I wanted to say that this was one of the most moving discussions I’ve listened to in a while. My grandfather is often portrayed as a lone intellectual, mournfully and solemnly grappling with the big questions of life. But he had family and he had friends, who mattered to him and to whom he mattered. His legacy could not have existed ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the New York Review: An Episode of Private Life with Namwali Serpell
Q: What initially drew you to Toni Morrison as a subject, and how do you frame her within the broader literary canon?
Serpell explains that her engagement with Morrison centers on the complexity of her work and the way Morrison challenges simple biographical readings, advocating for close reading that foregrounds the books themselves rather than reducing Morrison to a symbolic status.
Benjamin H. D. Buchloh on Gerhard Richter (Re-run)
Q: What do we do with their beauty?
Beauty in Richter's work is not a settled given but a question that opens up a dialogue about how form, gesture, and chromatic mediation relate to memory, history, and ethics; the painting's beauty is always entangled with melancholy, loss, and critique of Enlightenment rather than a simple, comforting experience.
Bonus Episode | Anni Albers: A Life | Live with Nicholas Fox Weber
Q: Would you paint a picture of that initial interaction with Anni?
Weber describes a chance encounter rich with unexpected warmth and mutual curiosity, where a young scholar meets Anni and Josef in a setting that quickly reveals shared interests and the potential for collaboration, signaling a pivotal opening in the relationship that would influence Anni's later explorations in textiles and design.
The Story of Walter Benjamin’s Final Days and His Cherished Paul Klee Drawing
Q: What happened at the French border as the Nazi advance accelerated?
Benjamin lacked a French exit visa, faced legal barriers, and ultimately, amid confusion and misfortune, he took a dangerous path that led to his death in Fort de Boyer near Lourdes/Marseille area.
The Story of Walter Benjamin’s Final Days and His Cherished Paul Klee Drawing
Q: Did Benjamin and Paul Klee know each other or belong to the same circle?
No, they were not closely connected; Benjamin's circle was primarily German Jewish intellectuals in Berlin, with Klee in a different geographic sphere.
