And we hear so often that a tired dog is a good dog, so sometimes we think they just need more training or stimulation or play time. But finding out my dog had seasonal allergies and treating them made a huge difference in her anxious temperament. She was just miserable all the time. This is a great podcast idea and I love that the episodes are short... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Your Dog Is Slowing Down (Aging, Pain, or a Behavior Change?)
Q: Anna, when you really started paying attention to seeing your dogs differently, what was the first thing about aging dogs that made you pause?
The first pause came from recognizing the emotional aspect of aging—the pre-grieving that can accompany seeing dogs slow down, and the realization that small, subtle changes in mobility or energy can signal discomfort that deserves attention rather than resignation.
Why Your Dog Looks Confident… But Their Behavior Still Feels Off
Q: How do you differentiate between true confidence and masking driven by motivation or treats?
The guest emphasizes observing whether the dog fixates on changes or checks in on the environment when a trigger occurs, and stresses removing motivators to see the dog's genuine response.
Why Your Dog Looks Confident… But Their Behavior Still Feels Off
Q: Would you tell me about the first job or assignment you ever gave Whiskey?
Amber explains that for Whiskey, daily meals were structured as training, turning feeding into purposeful activity to channel high drive and energy, which helped build a reliable sense of purpose and confidence.
Your Dog Seems Off—Could Pain Be Affecting Their Behavior?
Q: How has nutrition specifically impacted the management of these conditions for your dog?
Switching to a fish-based protein and low-copper prescription diet, along with careful monitoring of liver enzymes, reduced symptoms and stabilized the condition, illustrating how diet can be a primary driver in disease management.
Your Dog Seems Off—Could Pain Be Affecting Their Behavior?
Q: Tell me about the moment you realized there might be something medical going on and how you advocated for your dog.
The dog had intermittent vomiting with blood in the stomach bile, which prompted urgent vet visits and a series of tests. Persistently pursuing a thorough diagnostic path and asking for additional tests helped identify the underlying diseases.
