Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kengo Kuma
Q: So when your philosophy first took shape and you were first designing, how has it changed from that point on through to today?
I began in 1986, witnessed the bubble economy burst in 1991 which pushed me to rural Japan where I could work with local craftsmen and materials, leading to a practical third way beyond Metabolism and nostalgia, a method that remains focused on place, material dignity, and humility.
Kengo Kuma
Q: Mount Fuji project is basically sitting on the slope, and in front, we can have the view to Mount Fuji, but behind, there is a mountain. Can you explain those contextual influences on this project?
The Mount Fuji Residence takes advantage of the site to frame Mount Fuji visually, while keeping a humble, single-story form that grounds the building. The interior uses rice paper for softness, and the Ganko Goose Flying Plan guides the relationship between architecture and garden to harmonize with the landscape.
Kengo Kuma
Q: I'd like to ask you to tell me a bit more about that experience, growing up in your own background, please.
Growing up in a small village near Yokohama, with Satoyama landscapes and farmers around, I learned to see architecture as something deeply connected to place and nature, which later shaped my design philosophy beyond the then-dominant industrial aesthetics.
Marie Kristine Schmidt - GUBI CEO
Q: How did your early days and fascination with design shape your current approach to leadership and product storytelling?
A lifelong love of design, a belief in design as meaningful objects for memories, and a passion for the aesthetics of design drive how I lead—always prioritizing storytelling, context, and audience reaction as essential parts of the design process.
Marie Kristine Schmidt - GUBI CEO
Q: Has your background within GUBI prepared you for this role, and what previous positions helped you build deep brand understanding?
Heading up the brand for five years established a foundation in storytelling and product leadership, showing the importance of combining commercial strategy with creative direction to communicate the brand's value effectively.
