  • Marx’s really???

Why the hell are you giving people advice in a podcast to take a view of Marx? Are you kidding me?

  • Thank you

Erick, we don’t know each other, but I’ve been guided into stoicism by you podcast, and I was worried about the misuse of stoicism to foment extremism and misogyny, so hearing your last episode about courage makes my heart lighter. Be sure you standing up is an incredibly powerful act of courage and thank you for being the voice for stoicism in its most core values.

  • Boring

This is the most narcissistic, self-grandiose boring drivel I’ve ever heard. The personal anecdotes are shallow and repetitive across episodes. I’d like to hear from some female stoics. Are there any? How does any of this relate to modern pressures on modern women? This is just another man mansplaining.

  • Actionable insights

I didn’t know what to expect from this podcast - but it’s truly excellent. Cloward’s voice is amiable and soothing - but the themes are provocative and inspirational. I especially appreciate the quotations from the likes of Jung, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus. (But James Clear? Really? Not quite in the same pantheon.)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

370 - Q & A: Opinions, Anxiety, Ambition, & Knowing vs. Doing
Q: I know what I should do, but I can't seem to make myself do it.
This is Acrasia, weakness of will. The host emphasizes that this is a timeless, human problem, not a personal flaw. The remedy lies in emotional courage, reducing avoidance, and building effective systems. He references Epictetus and James Clear (systems > goals) and suggests nightly reviews to align identity with actions, treating resistance as a signal to act rather than a cue to stop.
370 - Q & A: Opinions, Anxiety, Ambition, & Knowing vs. Doing
Q: Can you be a good Stoic and still have big ambitions?
Ambition can be virtuous when grounded in virtue and service rather than fear or the need to prove oneself. The host differentiates between striving from fear (which is exhausting and unstable) and striving from virtue (which is sustainable). He cites examples like Marcus Aurelius and Ralph Waldo Emerson to illustrate using talent for the common good and personal growth, while keeping a focus on character and integrity.
370 - Q & A: Opinions, Anxiety, Ambition, & Knowing vs. Doing
Q: What's the Stoic take on anxiety?
Anxiety can be informative when viewed as a signal rather than a narrative. The Stoics practiced premeditatio malorum — imagining potential bad outcomes to reduce shock and increase preparedness. The goal is clear-eyed preparation, not catastrophizing; separate the facts from emotional reactions and focus energy on what you can control, stepping in with purposeful action rather than spiraling.
370 - Q & A: Opinions, Anxiety, Ambition, & Knowing vs. Doing
Q: How do I stop caring about what other people think of me?
The host explains that you should recognize that other people's opinions are not within your control and shift focus to your own character, choices, and integrity. He recommends the dichotomy of control, cultivating self-approval through living in alignment with your values, and a reframing that belonging should not require betraying who you are. A practical practice suggested is to examine whose opinion you fear and what you actually stand for, reducing the weight of external approval over time.
356 - Q & A: Temperance, Self-Forgiveness, Dealing with Chaos
Q: How can Stoicism guide us through current events?
Acceptance of chaos, understanding what we can control, and focusing on community action are key Stoic principles to navigate emotions during turbulent times.
