A Physician’s Leap from ER to Startup: Curiosity, Clarity, and Impact with Dr. Anurag Gupta
Q: What would be your closing advice for physicians curious about the startup world?
Be curious and willing to explore multiple pathways, start small by tackling real problems, and actively build relationships. Look for leadership opportunities within healthcare organizations and leverage mentorship and networks to help you grow while you pursue meaningful patient impact.
A Physician’s Leap from ER to Startup: Curiosity, Clarity, and Impact with Dr. Anurag Gupta
Q: Do you think an MBA is essential for physicians who want to work in industry, or are there alternative paths to gain the needed business acumen?
An MBA can be incredibly valuable for networking and learning business frameworks, but it's not the only route. The best approach depends on your goals; many people succeed by gaining on-the-job experience, building a strong network, and learning through real-world projects. If opting for an MBA, a full-time program offers the strongest network benefits.
A Physician’s Leap from ER to Startup: Curiosity, Clarity, and Impact with Dr. Anurag Gupta
Q: So Anurag, could you share with us a little bit about your career journey going from being an emergency physician to a founder?
I describe a path driven by curiosity and big-picture questions about access and how care is delivered. Early startup experiences during medical school and a bold move to pursue an MD-MBA expanded my toolbox. I weighed residency versus industry carefully, eventually choosing emergency medicine for strategic flexibility and the ability to scale later, then built Tembo Health to address dementia care at scale.
[Re-Release] Startups, Strategy, and Serendipity: Navigating Healthcare Innovation with Dr. Paige Bhansali
Q: How do you think about building skills and networks without necessarily doing an MBA?
She explains multiple pathways to acquiring needed skills, including MBA, targeted consulting, mentoring, and hands-on experience, emphasizing that the right path depends on life balance and career goals rather than a strict requirement.
[Re-Release] From Pediatric Cardiologist to Health Tech Innovator with Dr. Bronwyn Harris
Q: What was your next step after the design intensive and how did your career evolve from there?
She explains the decision to pursue an innovation-focused fellowship, then founding and funding an asthma tool startup, followed by a stint at Apple to scale design and engineering collaboration, before continuing in wearable health tech.
