  • Great PD and expands my knowledge beyond my everyday practice

I love learning more about topics and areas of speech pathology that I don’t work in. That information has proved helpful so many times, when I’m asked or needing to direct someone to a service within Speech pathology. Eg I work with paediatrics, but needed to direct someone to services for adults, or brain injury, adult literacy, etc.

  • Scripted episodes

Some episodes are fantastic and highly informative. Other episodes are hard to listen to as it is very obvious that speakers are reading a script. I would highly suggest prompting speakers to talk naturally as listening to people read a pre written script is not enjoyable.

Plans include collecting data from other regions beyond Temma to capture regional linguistic diversity, with the aim of refining the tool and promoting culturally responsive clinical reasoning globally.
Multilingual assessment & ethical global engagement S8E10
Q: What role did co-design with local practitioners play in the tool's development?
Local Ghanaian speech pathologists were involved in every development phase, providing practical feedback, refining instructions, and ensuring the tool's phrases and scales were culturally appropriate and understandable for Ghanaian children.
Multilingual assessment & ethical global engagement S8E10
Q: How did you account for language variation and multilingual exposure in your assessment tool?
The caregiver questionnaire collects detailed information about languages spoken or exposed to, frequency, proficiency, and timing of exposure, which is used alongside test scores to interpret children's abilities within their Ghanaian language context.
Multilingual assessment & ethical global engagement S8E10
Q: Could you start off by telling us a bit about yourself and your work?
I'm a Ghanaian speech pathologist who helped establish the University of Ghana's MSc program and developed a Ghanaian English assessment tool; my PhD focused on creating a culturally responsive tool for multilingual children, using local co-design and contextual understanding to ensure relevance.
Systematic synthetic phonics S8E8
Q: What is the role of speech pathologists in diagnosing dyslexia and how has that shifted recently?
Diagnosis is now more nuanced, with less reliance on IQ discrepancies; emphasis is on phonological processing and explicit code knowledge, using both single-word and pseudo-word measures to gauge decoding abilities and determine appropriate supports.
