Much has been written about the South African Border war which is also known as the Namibian War of Independence. While the fighting was ostensibly about Namibia, most of the significant battles were fought inside Namibia’s northern neighbour, Angola. South Africa’s 23 year border war has been almost forgotten as the Cold War ebbed away and bygones were swept under the political carpet. South Afri... more

This is a really interesting dive into a topic I knew nothing about. There is so much great information and it’s a great mix of the big picture as well as the small details that bring the history alive.
I am enthralled.
The host Des, delivers the story of the Border War in South West Africa and the regions bordering South Africa in such a way that you will be transported back to a time that clearly influenced current times.
I love this podcast. It really shined a light on a very forgotten about, in the West at least, but significant aspect of the cold war. As a soldier myself I found some of the universal experiences of what living in the field, or as the SADF called it "the bush", to ring exceedingly authentic and relatable on a human level. I highly recommend (and have) Mr. Latham's podcast on the conflict to anyone who knows nothing about the conflict or has even a vague curiosity about it.
Im German (Europe) married to a Vambo. Cause of that I’m very interested about the history of Namibia. I started off with Leutweins biography, found Henning Melbers newer history. Now this podcast is filling the gap. As an former army-nco the war stories are fitting to me as a point of view.
A strong and sometimes proud and sometimes uncomfortable podcast. Transports a person to those days and battles. But more than that, reminds a person that Warfare is always politics by other means and it is the young who die for old men’s beliefs.
