  • Hello Thank You

I enjoy the process of your interviews and how your provide insight with other answers. It seems to interest all involved. Thank you! The Blood Orange episode was quite intriguing. I feel so much closer to his music relating to parts of process.

  • Great pod & Suggestion

Hey, just listened to the Mag Bay ep and loved it. One suggestion I would make is maybe providing a little less info about what other writers do / what studies you’ve read on process as you interview them and instead fully focus on finding out and asking what the guests do themselves.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan)
Q: Or do you feel like creating every day makes things stale and derivative?
Lindsey explains that she's not a strict daily-writer and emphasizes the value of time, focus, and allowing ideas to ripen, noting that different records require different rhythms and that forcing daily output can be counterproductive.
Cameron Picton (black midi, My New Band Believe)
Q: How do external factors influence your writing, such as sounds from outside or walks around the city?
He describes how ambient sounds, city life, and even brief walks or commutes can seed ideas. He also mentions a practice of recording these impressions and sometimes integrating them into the final music or using them as prompts to shape melodies and rhythms.
Cameron Picton (black midi, My New Band Believe)
Q: Is it important to create in some fashion every day or do you not like to force it?
Picton explains that writing is often not a daily, rigid task; there are long stretches without a notebook, but when inspiration returns, the flow can be intense. He notes that writing can be an exercise in consistency without pressuring oneself to force output every day, and that sometimes breaks allow ideas to mature until they feel ready to surface.
Nate Ruess
Q: Is it important to create every day, or can forcing creation lead to derivative work?
Ruess suggests it can go both ways, noting that inspiration can strike spontaneously even after periods of dormancy, while also acknowledging that he doesn't want writing to feel like a job; the balance between momentum and space is personal.
Tyler Ballgame
Q: How do you organize voice memos and ideas?
The guest prefers a scattered, unorganized approach, believing organization can stifle creativity, and uses voice memos as a reservoir to be tapped when inspiration strikes.
