Fascinating story. I haven’t seen this film but now want to watch it. Being European, I was aware of Christiane F. and The Baader Meinhof Complex, also excellent films. Thanks for highlighting this one. Noam Gonick is a great guest and Norm Wilner an amazing host.

  • Very interesting but...

You have to put up with more than occasional typical Hollywood left-wing garbage. The once upon a Time in Hollywood episode is the worst kind of garbage naval gazing you'll never hear. It's awful. If you understand the left, however, it makes sense because to them, SJW insanity is a religion. Regarding the film analysis, it is very interesting. The podcast that deserves 10 stars is the Jaws one. Loved the enthusiasm on that. That's how to do it.

  • 10 years!

I am now updating my own third anniversary review to reflect the additional years of what this podcast does so well: being insightful and enthusiastic. So many of these have led me to rewatch the movie being discussed, or check out a film I wouldn’t have otherwise considered. And often it’s also put the guest’s project on my radar. I have to credit this show for many happy viewing experiences.

  • I love these conversations

I’ve been listening for years but listening to your Sirk discussion finally got me off my duff and into this review space. I’m learning so much and I LOVE how fluidly you go with whatever and wherever your guest takes the convo. Just a genuinely smart and engaging show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jonny Campbell on Get Carter
Q: Did you have fun watching it?
Yes, the film is a contagion thriller with a sharp edge of humor and a profound engagement with character, making the experience both entertaining and intellectually rewarding.
Alexandra Heller-Nicholas on Ms 45
Q: What makes Ms. 45 stand out within the rape-revenge genre?
It complicates revenge by showing that vengeance alone cannot restore wholeness or provide salvation; the film insists on exploring systemic violence and social structures, which elevates it beyond typical genre fare.
Pete Ohs on Evil Does Not Exist
Q: What makes this film feel so distinct in its approach to storytelling?
The film uses a slow, observant pace and a focus on ordinary moments that reveal deeper emotional and philosophical tensions, rather than relying on explicit plot beats, which creates a sense of intimate discovery.
Paris Barclay on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Q: Would you consider remaking or re-setting the story in a different historical period to reflect today's context?
Paris explains that setting it in the original period preserves the historical tension and immediacy of the social issues, while acknowledging how the story could be reframed for modern audiences depending on the goal of the project.
Blake Winston Rice on Hamnet
Q: What did you think of Hamnet?
The film presented an inevitable outcome which affected the emotional engagement for me, although it was solidly crafted.
