  • Audio bro

First off the content is good. And you know what you’re talking about. And I would enjoy listening to this podcast so much more if you could figure out the audio man. Some things are loud some things are too soft. It’s all over the place you never know what you’re gonna get day-to-day.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

🔴 Jun 2’s Top Cyber News NOW! - Ep 1144
Q: What would you recommend for someone who wants to build a home lab to prepare for cyber roles?
Start with a basic setup: a capable laptop, 2–3 monitors if possible, and a cloud-based lab with free Azure or AWS credits. Build a small Active Directory environment, simulate attacker and defender activities, and practice log analysis and PCAP analysis. Use free resources like Hack The Box or TryHackMe where appropriate, but tailor the lab to show concrete skills like vulnerability assessment, incident response, and reporting to a non-technical audience.
🔴 Jun 2’s Top Cyber News NOW! - Ep 1144
Q: What is a typical career path from help desk to SOC analyst, based on your experience?
Historically, many people started in help desk roles, then moved to security operations as they gained experience, though the exact path varies. Gaining hands-on experience—through a home lab, volunteering, or joining a security team for debriefs—helps bridge the gap. Networking and continuous learning are key, as practical demonstrations of skill and the ability to communicate risk to executives often matter as much as formal credentials.
🔴 May 13’s Top Cyber News NOW! - Ep 1131
Q: What certification would you recommend to get familiar with GRC and the actual work?
ISACA CISA is solid for the audit work; the host also promotes his own Simply Cyber Academy GRC Analyst Master Class as a comprehensive option.
🔴 May 15’s Top Cyber News NOW! - Ep 1133
Q: What kind of work actually moves the needle for hiring beyond certs?
Build a strong network, showcase tangible work through talks and content, and demonstrate impact with real projects rather than relying solely on certificates.
🔴 May 14’s Top Cyber News NOW! - Ep 1132
Q: What is your advice for handling AI/non-human identities in security programs?
Establish clear governance for NHIs, auditability, and permissions; ensure leadership oversight and restrict permissions to the minimum required; treat AI as a risk element that requires ongoing management and validation.
