相傳在很久以前，有位地方官員，為人十分貪心，總是帶頭壓榨百姓。他常常向百姓多徵收稅金，原本只要交一袋米，他卻硬要收到兩袋的量。百姓辛苦種田，收成不多，還得把糧食送進官府。有人若是拿不出來，經常就要被差役責罵，甚至被抓去做苦工！百姓每天辛苦工作，卻還要被地方官員欺壓，大家都過得非常辛苦。
當時，民間有位讀書人為了發洩怨氣，於是寫了一副拆字聯：
一目不明，開口便成兩片
廿頭割斷，此身應受八刀

一󠇢行󠇡朔雁，避風雨而南來
萬隻陽鳥，破煙雲而東去
秋高氣爽，正值出遊的好時節，大文學家朱熹前往郊外踏山賞秋。抵達一處涼亭時，雲層漸漸散去。此時，天高雲淡，一行大雁從北方飛來。朱熹看見這樣的秋景，突然有感而發，隨即吟詠一句上聯：
一行朔雁，避風雨而南來
朱熹思來想去，始終沒有想到合適的下聯，只好無奈返家。此事傳出以後，許多文人都想試著寫出下聯，但意境均不高。轉眼間，到了隔年春天，南宋理學家陳孔碩帶著兒子陳樺出外踏青，陳孔碩隨口提到了朱熹所作的上聯，陳樺不假思索便對道：

湖水漣漪，一󠇡碧深情何不生蓮
庭花爛漫，滿園春色怎可無梅
從前從前，在遙遠的村落裡，住著一位年輕的秀才。他滿腹經綸，卻因為厭惡複雜的官場，甘願隱居在家鄉教書。
有天，他出了一個三字上聯，想讓學生們試試看，這個上聯是：
「雞冠花」
一炷香過去了，卻始終沒有學生能回答出來，秀才只好請他們回家想想看。隔日一大早，一位小男孩走向秀才，他興奮地說道：「老師！我對上了！」他對出的下聯是：
「狗尾草」
秀才十分驚喜，他詢問小男孩：「這是你自己對上的嗎？」小男孩害羞地搔搔頭：「這是我姐姐... more

風寒露冷，來朝󠇡必定成霜
在很久以前，某位大財主家中的小女兒，出落得蕙質蘭心且才貌雙全，村子裡尚未結婚的成年男子，都想求娶這位千金小姐；然而，前來說親的媒人，卻被她一一拒於門外。
大財主十分著急女兒的婚事，他困惑地問道：「你究竟想找什麼樣的男子呢？」財主女兒拿出一個上聯，回答道：「我只願嫁給文采斐然的君子！如果他能與我心靈相通，成功對出令我滿意的下聯，那麼不論貧富貴賤，我都願意與他成婚。」她的上聯是：
