  • Sewing Stories

This podcast has me captivated. It’s the storytelling that captures me. I’ve been listening to the podcast for a little while now and after listening to the QuiltCon 2023 episode, I felt inspired, emotional and captivated. I appreciate the careful threading of the messages Meg takes us through with her guests. As a hobbiest quilter, learning the ropes to this art form and craft, listening to this podcast has become part of understanding the identity and culture behind quilting.

Cait Trantham - Scratching the Creative Itch
Q: What's next for Cait?
She's exploring more ways to connect with her audience, developing an app-based resource for thrifting and upcycling, and pursuing the dream of a sewing show involvement.
Cait Trantham - Scratching the Creative Itch
Q: Why did upcycling become the magic key for you?
Upcycling allowed her to see garments come together without big fabric investments, turning closet discoveries into practical, creative explorations that unlocked deeper understanding of construction.
Cait Trantham - Scratching the Creative Itch
Q: So how did you learn to sew and who inspired that?
She learned from her mother, who sewed all her life, and gradually taught herself quilting before tackling garment sewing through upcycling to keep costs low and learning-by-doing.
Mary Lou Cox – The connections you make…you never know where they’ll take you!
Q: Can you walk us through your path in the entertainment industry and how you ended up at Disney?
After college I interned at an entertainment company, then stayed on as employees. A chance moment in a shop where I was asking about patterns led to a new job through a contact, and I gradually progressed into pattern making. Disney eventually called me, and I've been there for 25 years, leading a team of sewists who create costumes for shows and parades.
Mary Lou Cox – The connections you make…you never know where they’ll take you!
Q: We are very excited to have you with us today. How did you learn to sew and who influenced your sewing?
I learned from my mom, who sewed for the family and created clothes in tight spaces. I would watch her at the sewing machine and later realized I had to sew when I wanted new school clothes, which led me to start sewing at age 10.
